No answer.
“Sinclair?”
I sat up and shook him, but he didn’t respond. He didn’t even blink.
“This isn’t funny, Sin. Answer me.” My voice was a reedy, tense thing.
But he didn’t move. His chest didn’t rise and fall. His pupils were blown, mouth slack, and I knew then and there I should never have trusted him.
A tear cascaded down my cheek as I stared at the evidence of what a monster I was.
“You fucking liar!” I screamed, my tears falling in earnest as I slammed my palm down on his chest. “You lied to me,” I whispered, voice breaking. “You promised you wouldn’t die, and you lied.”
Chapter
Thirty-Seven
LUCIFER
“Wrong!”
Honestly, I didn’t understand how any of these horsewomen were capable of tying their own shoes, not to mention starting the apocalypse.
“My king, I swear, I?—”
I spun around, letting one of the poison-tipped daggers in my hand fly. This one nicked her ear, dark black blood splashing down her shoulder before joining the other drops on the floor.
“I care nothing for your promises. You have failed me at every turn. So I’m going to ask you one more time, you sniveling, worthless excuse of a demon. Where. Is. She?” I threw another dagger, this one sinking into her thigh. “Where is the wife you promised me?”
“The penthouse?—”
“Is gone!” I roared, flinging my arm out to gesture to the two Princes standing at attention on the other side of the room. “You heard their reports as well as I. There weren’t any bodies in the rubble, which means they escaped. Unless you’re trying to tell me that my most loyal and devoted servants lied to me?”
Pride snarled and took one step forward before Envy stopped him with an arm across his chest.
“They’ve escaped with her. That’s the only option. I’d feel it if she’d died,” Famine spluttered like the weakling she was.
I threw the final dagger just for fun. This one hit her right in the tit.
She whimpered, her eyes shining with pain and fury, but there was a hint of relief in her eyes. Silly sausage. I was far from done with her.
“Oh no, Sabine. You don’t get to play the victim here. You made me promises, and I fucking intend to collect,” I said in a voice so soft it was little more than a whisper as I prowled closer to her.
Not even she was stupid enough to mistake the softer volume for the removal of a threat.
“Th-the dream walks.”
“Yes, Sabine? Could you, in fact, be referring to the dream walksIhad to initiate? The conceptIcame up with on my own? Oh please, do tell me what novel idea you think I should incorporate into my backup plan after you have failed me in every conceivable way, you stupid fucking cunt. I can’t wait to hear this.”
I pulled the daggers out one at a time, relishing her winces, especially on the last one, as I may have put a little too much mustard on my final throw. The blade was embedded in her spinal column. My aim could use a little work, if I was being honest.
She coughed up blood and dragged in a rattling breath. Oh, goody. I punctured a lung.
“Bring her into your dreams.”
Her wounds began healing as I returned to my original place, then thought better of it and took two steps closer.
“Did I ask for your fucking help?!” I screamed, hurling a dagger and watching with no small amount of pride as it sank into her belly, just below her sternum.
