“Not really into the dating scene. I’m more of a one-woman kind of guy.”
Closing her eyes, she crinkled her nose, and it was damn cute. “Yeah, I don’t know why I said that. I knew that. You’ve been with Olana forever. You’re loyal and sweet and not into that.” She sounded dejected, almost like she was certain I’d never be interested in a girl like her.
“Please make room on the dance floor for the new Mr. and Mrs. Walker.”
The DJ lowered the music, and still holding Britt, I directed her to the side to join the circle forming around Reign and Devin.
Reign stepped onto the floor alone and greeted her new husband’s cousins. When she realized Devin was strolling leisurely behind her, she gestured him over and took his hand.
“Hi everyone,” Reign said into a microphone, looking at the crowd brightly. “Don’t worry, I’m not making a long, drawn-out speech or anything. We already had that with Devin.” She poked her thumb into Devin’s chest, and he wrapped his arm around her to pull her closer. He kissed her on the forehead, looking glassy-eyed and blissful. Damn, my friend was so in love, and it was nice to see he’d found his person.
Reign giggled when he hugged her tightly but continued. “We just wanted to say thank you for coming all the way out here to celebrate our wedding. I know Vegas isn’t for everyone, so the fact that you came and took the time out of your busy lives really speaks volumes.”
A Las Vegas wedding was definitely a surprise, but Devin claimed it had to be here so they could go on their honeymoon after his training season break. I had my own theories about why they needed to get married quickly, and it had everything to do with Devin being obsessed with Reign. Getting a ring on her finger as fast as possible was always his endgame and was probably why he looked so smug right now. “We just had some news we wanted to share, and I thought there was no better place to do it than here, with all our loved ones.”
Britt and I looked at each other with intrigue.
“Devin and I…” Reign drawled out, squeezing the life out of Devin’s hand. “Are expecting twins.”
The minute we registered her words, we broke into cheers along with the rest of the guests and waited in line to congratulate the happy couple. By the time we got to them, Reign had tears streaming down her face as she pulled Britt into a hug.
“Congrats, D.” I slapped Devin’s hand in a high-five and pulled him in for a hug. “I want to say I’m surprised, but the only thing surprising about this is that you took so long to knock her up.”
Devin chuckled and patted me on the back. “Believe me, I’ve been trying since I met her.”
“Oh, I know. You’re obsessed.”
“You’re one to talk.”
As I stepped out of the hug, my brows creased, and he rolled his eyes. “Have you told Britt you’re in love with her yet?”
“D,” I whispered sharply, cutting my gaze to Britt. Luckily, she was in conversation with Reign, so she hadn’t heard him.
Devin chuckled, completely unfazed. “Trust me on this. The longer you leave it. The worse you’re going to feel when you realize you wasted all your time fucking around when you could have been spending your time fucking around.”
“Noted.”
Thankfully, other guests were waiting to congratulate the couple, so I side-eyed my friend and stepped toward Britt, giving Reign a hug and kiss on the cheek in congratulations. I was pushed out of the way by Hayden before I could speak to Reign, leaving Britt and I standing to the side.
“Isn’t that the best news ever?” Britt tipped on her toes, emanating excitement.
“It’s great,” I said as Devin’s words echoed in my brain. How long would I wait to tell Britt I wanted to be with her?
Would I tell her at all?
“So, uh, do you want to dance again?” I asked, offering my hand, still feeling self-conscious. When Britt looked at me, it often felt like she could see right through me. Not to mention, I was still concerned she’d heard what came from my friend’s loose lips. If she noticed my nervousness, she didn’t show it as she dropped her hand in mine without hesitation.
“Sure.”
Tonight was going better than expected.
Finding a spot on the dance floor, I placed my palm on her hip before smiling at her.
“Isn’t She Lovely”played in the excited hall, and we swayed to the music in a way that reminded me of prom. I didn’t know where to put my hands or how Britt felt about us being together or who was watching, but I desperately hoped she felt the same as me.
Funny. This moment felt like it was the start for us. Not the middle of a long, messy story we’d been building up to over several years. Maybe we could start fresh with each other. The way I wished it could have always been.
As Britt swayed in my arms, she glanced around the dance floor, stopping to watch Reign in awe.
