“Maybe he’s decided he wants children.”
She let out a light laugh. “Maybe.” Then she sighed. “I really don’t know what he wants.”
“Cheyenne, the guy still likes you.”
“But I told him?—”
He squeezed her hand. “I don’t think he got the message.”
CHAPTER 16
Cheyenne
As they approached her condo, Eli stood, pushing his hands into the pockets of his khaki shorts. His posture was rugged as he glared at Micah, who gave Cheyenne’s hand another comforting squeeze.
“What can I do for you, Eli?” she asked when they reached him.
Eli stared at their hands. “What is this?”
She shrugged, feeling a tad unsettled. “Micah went snorkeling with me.”
“But you said last night that you wanted to focus on going to law school now.”
“I do.”
“But you’re snorkeling with him?” He waved a hand at Micah.
Cheyenne would have laughed at the way Eli was acting, if it wasn’t embarrassing her in front of Micah. “I told you we were over a long time ago.”
“Yet you went out to dinner with me the past two nights.”
“Eli, I told you last night we both need to go our own ways.”
Eli shook his head. “Do you think it’s just random that we ended up in the same condos together over spring break? Because I don’t. I think it’s fate. I think it’s something we ignored last year. Well, I don’t want to ignore it anymore. Cheyenne, give us a chance.”
Cheyenne avoided looking at Micah. If only the ground would open up and swallow her whole. “Eli, I have no idea how we ended up in the condos next to each other. We are not fated to be together. We are finished.”
He glared at Micah. “How do you even know each other besides one wedding?”
Micah smiled, and it wasn’t kind. “I’m not getting into this, but if I was, I would tell you thatourbusiness is notyourbusiness.”
Eli stepped closer to Micah. “Is that what you would tell me, dude?”
Micah puffed out his chest. “That’s what Iamtelling you.”
Cheyenne moved between them. “Eli, that’s none of your concern. Good luck to you the rest of spring break, and good luck to you in general.” She pushed past him to go up the stairs.
Eli glared at Micah. “Dude, I don’t know what your play is, but save yourself some trouble.” He moved toward his condo, shouting over his shoulder, “Because that’s all you were, Cheyenne—a lot of trouble for me!”
Micah took a threatening step toward him.
Cheyenne grabbed his arm. “Don’t pay him any attention. Come on in. I’m going to shower real quick. You can wait in here.”
Luckily, Micah followed.
“Sorry about that,” she said once she’d closed and locked the door behind them.
“He’s still got it bad for you.”
