Because whether this woman realized it or not, she was his. He could already see a vision of his life with her. He didn’t know how it would work, but he wanted it to.
“I guess what I’m saying is that I want to go to law school, and I want to have that career. But I don’t know how that fitsinto me being a mother and living on a ranch and raising my children. And I don’t know how it fits with you.” She broke off with a laugh. “I feel ridiculous even talking about this.”
He scooted closer and put his arm around her shoulders. “It doesn’t sound ridiculous to me at all. We’ll figure it out.”
She looked up at him, and he couldn’t resist. He pressed his lips to hers, and as they deepened the kiss, he hoped she understood his silent promise.
CHAPTER 27
Cheyenne
Cheyenne didn’t know how the day could go so fast. They were already walking onto a dinner cruise. They had been able to exchange their tickets from last night to tonight.
After surfing, they sat in the hot tub for a while and then had eaten some lunch. It all felt so easy with Micah. It was like she’d known him her whole life, which was crazy. At times like these, she wished she had a mother she could call and talk to. Then she could ask how it felt to fall in love. If only she still had her father. They had been close—well, as close as she could be when she was still a child. His guidance had always been perfect.
As soon as they set foot on the ship, Cheyenne had to laugh. Half the people here were spring breakers, and the other half were retired.
Micah looked snazzy in a polo shirt and khaki shorts. She loved the way his muscles moved under his shirt. His blond curls on top were gelled, making him look put together and handsome.
They settled down at a table next to the water. A server brought them some drinks at their request, pouring orange juice for her and water for him.
When the server left them alone, Micah’s eyes swept Cheyenne up and down. “If I didn’t tell you before, you look beautiful. I love that dress on you. And … well, I just like everything about you.”
For a second, she thought he was going to say he loved her, and she didn’t know if she was ready for that.
“What is it?”
“Nothing. We’re just going to enjoy the rest of this day and then face the music tomorrow, right?”
Micah looked around at all the people. “I guess we are.”
She could sense something was wrong. “What’s going on?”
He swung his gaze back to hers and covered both of her hands in his. “Nothing’s wrong. I didn’t want to tell you this, but I had a dream last night about … you know.”
Energy pulsed through her. She leaned closer. “Saint Catherine?”
He nodded.
“What did she say?”
He frowned. “I’ve been thinking about it all day. She said, ‘Seize the day.’”
Cheyenne jolted. Wasn’t that what Samantha had told her not too long ago? “Seize the day? Like fromDead Poets Society?” A sudden realization hit her. “We have to get off this dinner cruise. We have to get that amulet, try to find the treasure, even if it’s not the conquistador gold. It’s our last night.”
He looked surprised, and then he said, “We’d better go fast, because they’re getting ready to pull up the anchor.”
She rushed toward the gangplank. “Stop! We have to get off.”
They got there just in time, and as they hurried along the dock, Cheyenne laughed. “What are we doing?”
“I think we’re going to go get an amulet,” Micah said, speeding up. “What do you think?”
Once they reached the truck, they jumped into their seats and took off toward the church in Wilmington.
Cheyenne watched him as he focused on the road. “Even if we get the amulet, how are we going to look at Raine’s map?”
“I guess we have to ask him, or we’ll have to steal it.”
