“Yes.”

“I’m the head guard in the harem,” she says and then clamps a heavy bracelet around my left wrist. “If you leave the palace grounds that will poison you and send out a beacon for us to find you. If we find you in time you won’t die. Understand?”

“I understand. What planet are we on?”

She shakes her head at me. “Just don’t leave. When one of you dies we all suffer Kamos’s rage especially if it’s one of his alphas.”

“What do you mean, alphas?”

The head guard motions to the stunning room around us with her finger. “This area is for alphas and your bedrooms. It’s more luxurious than the rest of the harem and you’ve access to more servants, better food, and more UCs to buy appropriate clothing and jewelry for your position. There are only three alphas at any time.”

“And the other women?”

“They are segregated into betas and deltas. Six betas and nine deltas. You can socialize with them in other areas of the harem, but never forget they’re less than you.”

“What’s expected of me?”

“To serve Kamos in whatever way he wants. To keep yourself clean and your body and mind healthy.”

“That’s all?”

“And not to cause trouble. If you do there’ll be punishments.”

“I heard Kamos keeps his children here?” I ask out of curiosity.

“Yes.” Just as the head guard is answering, I spot a little grey girl peek out and look at us from behind a wall. She’s wearing a cute yellow dress. “That’s Ava’s daughter. Yes, the children are here until Kamos decides their futures.”

“How does he do that?”

“That’s not for us to think about. Now, follow me to your room. The last woman’s things are still there. You may go through her belongings and see if you want anything. If not I’ll offer it to the others.”

“The last number two, did she die?”

“I don’t know.”

I’m led into a gorgeous set of rooms including a sitting room, a small dining area, a bathroom and a large bedroom. Everything is colorful and it has a pleasing floral scent. I run my hands over the engraved wooden table. “All of this is lovely.”

“I’m glad. I was a bit concerned you might be disappointed after coming from Lord Juo’s, he was very wealthy.”

I don’t answer her and she begins opening the wardrobes that are filled with silky clothing and various kinds of silver jewelry. I also can’t miss all the leashes hanging in a special area along with whips.

“What are those for?” I point to the whips.

“Kamos likes to keep all his pets in order. If he wants to spank you for a small transgression you will bring your whip in your mouth to his rooms and he will use it on you. Speaking of which,you have to get better at Imperial or Kamos will force the doctors to implement it. I’ve seen that before and trust me, you don’t want that.”

“What happened?”

“The woman became mute and just did what anyone told her to do no matter what it was. It was very sad. She was gone inside. Don’t let that happen to you. Learn Imperial as fast as you can. Your servant will help you. She’s a very clever and patient young woman.”

The head guard then introduces me to my own servant. A young Imperial woman with shoulder length hair who calls herself Rae.

“I’m here to serve.”

“Thank you. I’d like some food,” I say testing the waters.

Rae nods and disappears.

The head guard gives me one final look and then says, “Behave yourself, learn Imperial, and you’ll be happy here, Lara from Earth.”
