In the end, it doesn’t matter what Marath or the insectoid or that drifting intelligence believes—my livelihood depends on treating humans as partially sentient pets. The day I acknowledge otherwise is the day I destroy everything I’ve built.

CHAPTER 55

Gabriel

Briar and I are talking when suddenly the door hisses open, and Aefre steps in, his green eyes scanning the room.

I’m stunned. Aefre is not a man who makes unannounced visits. He comes at the set times to watch us shower and relieve ourselves. I’m worried. Did he turn on his translator and listen to us speaking English? Is he going to punish us for talking about Gael the Returner?

“Your connection to one another is close, but it’s not enough. Tonight, I’m going to remove your chastity belts and we are all going to bond together. We need to tighten the bond between pets and trainer alike.”

I glance at Briar. I can’t tell how she feels about this.

“You need to work on your bond,” Aefre continues. “Trust each other. Understand each other and trust me. The final challenges will demand more than skill. They will demand unity from all of us.”

I meet his gaze.

“Ember, I’m giving you permission to have sex with Ash with me.” I’m completely fluent in Imperial, but he still speaks to me sometimes like I’m a mindless beast. “Do you understand?”

“Yes, Master Aefre.”

Then Aefre looks to Ash, “Do not bite off Ember’s penis. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand, Master Aefre” Briar answers. I can tell she’s annoyed he would say that her.

“If you do, I’ll sew up your vulva and you’ll never have sex again.”

Briar looks horrified and just then, Kaelin enters our room. It seems much smaller than it was two minutes ago. He has two leashes in his hand. He comes over and attaches one to my collar and the other to Briar’s.

“Ember, take off your clothing,” Aefre says.

I obey him. But the entire time I’m undressing, my eyes are locked with Briar’s. Her eyes are a mixture of surprise and desire. Perhaps she doesn’t mind sharing me. I know despite how much I want Briar all to myself, after being locked up in the chastity belt, I’ll take what I can get.

“Oh you’re already aroused,” Aefre says with mock enthusiasm when he removes the chastity device from my groan.

Kaelin moves over to Briar and attaches a leash around her neck. Then leads her to Aefre. He takes her leash tightly in his hand and then pulls her up so she’s standing on her tip toes. “Good girl,” he says while removing her chastity belt and starting to stroke her pubic hair. “You’re not nearly as excited as Ember. We need to change that. Do you have any ideas?”

Briar looks at me. I can tell she doesn’t know what to say.

I can’t offer her any help. I know Aefre likes these games to be mostly one-sided.

“Tell me what you want, Ash. You’ve done it before.”

Briar is still looking at me blankly. Then she turns her gaze to Aefre. “I don’t know.”

Wrong answer, I think.

“You don’t know?” Aefre repeats back. “If you don’t know then we’ll have to do what we normally would do if you weren’t here.”

I stiffen.

Briar sensing my tenseness says, “I changed my mind.”

Aefre shakes his head.

But she still adds, “I want Ember inside of me and I want you and Kaelin to watch.”

Aefre and Briar hold eye contact for some time. I’m worried he won’t let her go back on her first statement but after a minute he says, “Fine. Ember, come here. I want you both to have sex on the floor like animals. I’ll tell you what to do. Kaelin you hold Ember’s leash tight and I’ll hold Ash.”
