“Yeah, I figured I’d get it set up again in case you wanted to finish it.”
“Oh absolutely. There’s a shortage of perfect movies in the world; it would be a pity not to finish this one.”
“Nicely said.”
“Thanks, I try.”
We settle down on the couch again and he grabs the remote. “Did you need water or a snack or anything before I start this up again?”
“I’m fine for now, but I appreciate the offer.”
“No problem, babe.”
Oh my god he just called me babe. Little warning bells start to ring in my head, calling outdanger, danger, danger. But I block them out, instead snuggling closer to him. So what if I fall for him. What’s the worst that could happen?
My phone buzzing in my lap stirs me from my sleep. The living room is dark, and Alex is snuggled up next to me, snoring softly. We must have fallen asleep during the second movie. I glance down at the caller ID. It’s Katie. I also see that I have a missed call from my mom, and about 20 unread texts.Whoops.
I gently untangle myself from Alex and tiptoe into the bedroom, closing the door behind me. I answer the phone at a whisper.
“Hello?”
“Oh my GOD, there you are!” Katie practically shrieks into my ear. “Do you know what time it is? I hadn’t heard from you for hours and was starting to panic. I’m over here losing sleep, girl!”
“I’m sorry,” I apologize. “We fell asleep watching a movie. I didn’t plan to stay this long.”
“Uh huh, sure, watching a movie. Is that what the kids are calling it these days?”
“No, really! I did fall asleep.” I sigh deeply, then tell her the truth. “Though we did fuck earlier.”
“I figured as much,” Katie laughs. “I’m just glad you’re ok. I figured you’d call when you left and when I didn’t hear from you, I got a little bit paranoid.”
“A little bit? Babe you’re the conspiracyqueen, though I think Alex might give you a run for your money.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure he was serious when he told me he thinks his neighbors might be werewolves.”
“Oh god, no way,” Katie groans. “I’m supposed to be the irrational one that jumps to ridiculous conclusions!”
“I know! I don’t know how I’m supposed to deal with two of you in my life. I just might go insane.”
“You probably will,” Katie teases. “But seriously, you’re ok? Do you want me to come get you or anything?”
“No, I’ll probably try to go back to sleep, and if I can’t I’ll catch an Uber or something.”
“Alright. But I expect to hear from you in the morning. If I don’t, prepare for me to annoy the hell out of you till you answer me.”
“That sounds fair.”
“Sleep well. Love you, girlie.”
“Love you too.”
I end the phone call and open the bedroom door. Alex is sitting up on the couch, bleary-eyed and confused.
“Shit. Did we fall asleep?”
“We sure did.”
