“You asked?” Oh hell. I’m going to start crying again. Or harder.
“Yes. They’re your family.”
“Come here, girl.” Paul pulls me into him for a hug. “Congratulations, Chloe girl.”
I gasp. That’s what my mom called me. I know he wouldn’t know that, though.
“What?”
I squeeze him tighter. “Nothing. Just…” I look up at him and whisper, “Thank you.”
“He’s here!” Ethan’s shout cuts through the room. “You guys! He’s here!”
“He? It’s a boy?” Paul asks, already emotional.
“Yup. Ten fingers. Ten toes. One big penis. Two balls.”
“Way to ruin the moment,” I murmur, wiping my eyes.
Ethan narrows his eyes. “You did it? Already? What the heck, man?”
“I couldn’t wait. Didn’t want to wait.”
“It was perfect.” I tell Rex, smiling. And it was. I don’t need a flashy Instagram-worthy engagement. I just want his ring on my finger for the rest of our lives.
“Told you she’d say yes.” Ethan’s smug as he hugs me, speaking to Rex over top my head.
“You didn’t know?” I turn to look at Rex who’s not stopped smiling since he asked me the best question he’s ever asked me.
“I mean, I would never just assume. But, I had a pretty good idea you’d say yes.”
“When can I see my grandson?”
“Soon. They’re doing all sorts of weird crap in there that no one wants to see. The nurse will come get you when you can come back.”
“What’s his name?” Rex asks.
“You’ll find out in the room.”
He steps out then pokes his head back in. “Oh, and congratulations, you two.”
I smile as I gaze at my ring, holding my hand up so it catches the light.
“You like it?”
I shake my head. “I love it. It’s perfect.”
“Thank you for saying yes.”
“There was never any other answer for me. I started falling for you the night you fed me dessert.”
“So that’s all it took, huh? Buttering you up with sweets?”
“Pssh. Obviously. That and your sexy body.”
“I see. If I let myself go from all the desserts then you’ll leave me?”
“Of course.”
