Page 26 of Falling for You

I avert my eyes from Rex to my customer. “Hi Kenzie, I’ll be right with you.”

“No problem.”

“I’ll just, see you later?”

“You will?”

His eyes twinkle with humor when he explains, “Before I leave, I had planned to ask you earlier but got a tad bit distracted.”

“Right. After I showered you with water.”

“Can we grab dinner tonight or do you have plans?”

Against my better judgement, I find myself nodding in agreement. “No plans.”

“Yeah? Good. What time works?”

“Um, seven?”

“Seven works.” He hands me his phone. “Can I get your number?”

I’m not sure, but I think I see his cheeks heat when he asks.

“Sure.” I quickly program my number into his phone and hand it back to him.

“I’ll text you where to meet. Anything you don’t like?”

“Nope. I’m not picky. I’ll eat anything.”

Jana snorts. Seriously, she’s so immature. But I love her.

“Have a good day, Chloe,” he tells me then raises his voice, “Careful when she washes your hair. That hose is awful wily!”

“You turd,” I hiss jokingly. “It’s fine! We’re fine. No need to worry!”

Kenzie’s watching us with a smirk and I work to ignore her.

He knocks twice on the countertop then throws a wink my way before spinning on his heel and leaving.

“Looks like someone’s gonna get herself some hottie tonight,” Jana says, shimmying in her seat.

“Oh stop. I amnotgetting some.”

“Girl. He practically undressed you with his eyes the entire time he was here. I could have marched past him completely naked and he wouldn’t have noticed. He was so focused on you, it didn’t even bother him that you drenched him while shampooing his hair!” Jana’s voice raises as she talks, getting more and more animated.

“For real. I was here for a minute and I could tell that that guy has the major hots for you.”

“You are both so full of it,” I mumble, motioning Kenzie to follow me. If I think too much into it, I’ll believe them. And believing their words and optimism means putting my heart on the line. Something I definitely can’t do.

Chapter Seven

Rex

I sitin front of my computer screens fidgeting with a rip in the hem of my jeans, staring at my phone, wondering if I dare do what I’m about to do.

No doubt if I make this call, I’ll set myself up for a slew of shit I’m not sure I’m ready to take on. Yet, I don’t see any other way.

Lifting my phone to my ear, I wait while it rings once, twice, three times. I’m about to hang up, losing my nerve when a soft voice answers.
