“Good. Now, that’s settled, let’s eat, because I can eat bacon at any temperature but cold fried eggs aren’t delicious.”

“That’s it?”

“Did you expect a big blow up?”

Actually, yes. I may not be around my family much anymore, but I remember growing up how my mom would flip her top over what seemed to me like little things. I don’t want to say that to Chloe, though. I’m not comparing her to my mother, that would be the worst kind of criticism there is.

“My mom taught me something. It’s that there are times to be upset, and times to move on. In her death, she revealed something to me that I never would have expected, but staying upset with her or dwelling on it wouldn’t have done either of us any good.”

“You’re incredible,” I tell her sincerely, kissing her lips.

“Nah. I just know how to pick my battles. This is not one of those times. You were being kind and thoughtful, just poorly executed.”

“Me and my executions,” I joke, remembering when I tried carrying her and we collided into the end table.

After we sit down and dig into our breakfast, we chat about our day ahead. Something I didn’t know I’d like so much. “How busy is your day?”

“Typical schedule. Nothing too crazy.”

“Is that good?”

“Eh. Sometimes no. Today, yes. I’ll have time to run a few errands between clients. Typically, I like to stay busy all day.”

“But not today?”

I crunch on a piece of bacon, waiting to see if she’ll admit the why. I know why — she wants to get home. To me. I’m so smug, I can’t even hide it. Chloe’s got a crush on me, just like I have a crush on her.

“Nope.” Crunching on her own piece. Smiling. “I think I’d like to get home a little early today.”

“Hmm.”

We’re grinning around our food, teasing each other with barely-there touches and suggestive glances.

“Mm hmm.”

“Well, whatever you fill your extra time with, I’m sure it will be well worth it.”

“I think so, too.”

“Get over here,” I command.

She drops her fork, eggs still dangling from the tines. Stands up and I scoot my chair back to make room for her on my lap.

I tilt my head back, hands gripping her hips, letting us get carried away with the kiss. It doesn’t take us long to forget breakfast. Forget the argument I caused moments ago.

Now I have one thing on my mind: makeup sex.

For the first time in my life I’m going to experience makeup sex.

“Chloe?”

“Hmm?” she hums against my lips, her fingers sliding through my short hair.

“I’m sorry for earlier.”

She grins, biting her lip. “You’re already going to get lucky, no need to try for the makeup sex now.”

She already knows me all too well.
