“And this is ours, too.”
A small pendant hangs from a delicate silver chain with two tiny stones. One emerald. One diamond. “Not real yet, she gets the real deal when she’s older,” Reed assures me.
“Can I wear this ring, too?” I ask Emmy and she beams.
I let her slide it over my finger and help out when it gets stuck by the knuckle. Once the two rings are sandwiched together, Emmy looks satisfied. “See? It’s the three of us together now.” Oh my gosh. I am going to die of happiness. She is so amazing.
Reed lifts Emmy into his arms and kisses her cheek. “You did good, Emmy.”
I look at my hand and up at the two of them together. “Not good. Great. You both did.”
Reed pulls me in for a hug with him and his daughter.
“Emmy’s right. The three of us.”
“Hmm.”
“Hmm what?” he asks, eyebrows furrowing.
“Oh, nothing.”
He shakes his head. “You’re up to no good again. I see it in your eyes.”
I shrug.
“Sadie…”
“Yes?”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“Might need to get another ring made.”
His eyes widen and he sets Emmy down. “Really?”
“Really. Found out this morning but you were already gone and I couldn’t tell you.”
We’d decided to start trying to get pregnant over the summer, shortly after we moved into the house we built together. Well, we didn’t build it. We hired someone to do that for us.
Just like before when I said yes, Reed whoops and kisses me. His hands thread into my hair but he keeps it PG, which is good because Emmy is currently wedging her way in between us.
“What?”
“Sadie just made me very happy, Emmy.”
She rolls her eyes. “Duh. I knew that.”
She huffs and walks away, already bored with the conversation. Reed knows it’s too early for us to say anything and we had already discussed that we’d wait until we were further along to tell Emmy just in case something happened to the baby.
Reed’s phone rings and he chuckles. “She said yes,” he says by way of answering. “Emmy, go get the door.”
She runs out of the room and to the back door. I take it this was all planned for how well she knows what to do. All our friends and family follow Emmy back into the room.
Reed’s parents, my mom and Henry, Samuel, Justin and Kandace and the girls.
Justin moved into my house over the summer after he sold the business. He bought the house from me and I paid the favor forward that was paid to me when I bought the house.
It hasn’t gone unnoticed that Justin and Kandace have been spending a lot of time together lately and the way they look at each other can only be compared to the way I look at Reed.
