"Get. out," he says quietly, but just as firmly. However, I can hear the tremble in his voice.

After one final glance, he walks across the room to the far side and stares silently out the window.

I resist the urge to open up to him about how I'm feeling. Instead, I close my eyes and let out a shuddering breath as I trace my fingers over my neck where his touch lingers.

I turn and leave the room, walking through the empty hallway, lost in thought. Minutes later, the area becomes crowded with students as they start to leave class.

"Hey, pretty girl." I feel a colossal arm wrap around me, knowing instantly who it belongs to, and I relax into Erik's embrace. "Why are you looking so sad?"

"I look sad?"

"Well, I'm used to seeing that ear-to-ear grin on your face."

"I was up early this morning and didn't get any coffee before coming here."

"That'll do it."

Or maybe it's because undeniable chemistry and horrific timing have come together, buddied up, and decided to ruin my life.

"Listen, you'll probably say no, but we're having a party tonight. You in?"

"Sure."

"What?" He gives me a puppy-like, wide-eyed look of confusion.

"Please don't make me repeat it because I'm already regrettingit." With a smile, he removes his arm from my shoulder and cautiously steps back, raising his hands in surrender.

"Okay, I heard you the first time, and you can't change your mind."

"It'll only be this once and only because I'm going to need a drink after the last few weeks I've had."

"I'll get you your favorite to help you deal with having to be social."

"Okay, so what's my favorite drink, Mr. Thornton?" I narrow my eyes at him, waiting for him to respond.

"Anything that requires a wine glass is usually a safe bet for you."

"Am I really that boring?"

"I never said that, and to answer you, definitely not."

"Well, maybe I'll shockyou tonight and trysomething different."

"I'll save some shots for you then." I fake a gag because the thought of getting sambuca or tequila drunk makes me want to hurl.

"Get out of here. I'll see you later." I make my way to the library, and he heads straight for the gym, giving me a quick wave before disappearing around the corner.

I have one more shift left for the week. After that, I plan to spend the rest of the weekend practicing self-care and not leaving my room or speaking to anyone other than Jen—aside from this party I've just stupidly agreed to go to.

Chapter 15

Tessa

Jen glares at me as she takes a bite of her tuna and cheese melt. "I can't believe you agreed to this tonight," she says, her tone laced with curiosity. "You hate parties. It's your thing."

"My thing?" I burst out laughing, nearly choking on my ham and turkey sub.

"Yeah, it's also my thing but mostly yours."
