“Nein, there is not. But it seems like the most logical place, provided the deed even still exists. It could have been destroyed long ago.”

That’s true. He pointed to the page. “Any idea what this latest riddle means?”

A smile creased her lips.

“I think I may be of some help.”

KOGER WAS BACK IN DOWNTOWN MUNICH, HAVING LEFT RANDYMiller’s apartment with nothing. He’d yet to hear from Malone and decided that a trip south to the military archives would be a waste of time. He was in a taxi, headed to meet with Malone, who’d texted to say he was on the third floor of the state library and would wait for him to arrive.

His phone buzzed.

The screen notedUnknownas to the caller.

He answered anyway.

“I have some information for you.” Trinity Dorner.

“I’m listening.”

“Malone’s phone has been pinged through the CIA. Our people there just reported it. Rife’s friends within the agency did it for him. We’re going to purge them all when this is over, but for now we need to use them.”

“Fox’s idea?”

“Absolutely. On this he and Danny Daniels agree. The CIA has a cancer that’s fast growing. Daniels cut out some. We’re going to excise the rest.”

Not his problem. “What did the ping reveal?”

“Malone is at the Bavarian State Library.”

Right on.

“So is Terry Knight,” Trinity said.

He smiled. “Good for the goose and the gander?”

“Something like that. We can ping phones too. I thought you should know. Watch yourself, Derrick.”

The call ended.

The taxi turned onto Ludwigstrasse and passed the university. He settled back in the seat and told the driver to slow down and go past the library building, then round the block and return. Plenty of cars filled the busy boulevard on both sides. A red light stopped them just before the library. He used the opportunity to scan the opposite side of the street.

And spotted Terry Knight.

Crossing.

Headed for the library.

“Check that,” he said. “I’ll get out here.”

COTTON WAITED FOR MCCARTER TO EXPLAIN.

“King Maximilian, Ludwig II’s father, died on March 10, 1864. My father told me that he spent his last day on this earth talking to his eldest son, wishing that Ludwig would die as peacefully as he was about to. He also recalled a sixteenth-century prophecy from Nostradamus.Quand le Vendredi Saint tombera sur le jour de Saint George, Paques sur le jour de Saint Marc, et la Fete Dieu sur le jour de Saint Jean, tout le Monde pleurera. Her French was excellent, and he easily understood.

When Good Friday falls on St. George’s Day, Easter on St. Mark’s Day, and Corpus Christi on St. John’s Day, all the world will weep.
