“So you say you have been feeling off for a number of weeks? Fatigued. Sleeping long hours. And struggling to keep your food down.”

“Yes. I guess it’s just the stress of the upcoming fashion week show. I didn’t realize I’d been burning the candle at both ends.”

That had to be it. She’d pushed herself too hard. The break on Fire Island hadn’t been much of a break. Instead it had just been a change of scenery. With a lot of hot and heavy sex.

Doctor Porter glanced at the closed bedroom door. “The young gentleman outside with Bryce. Is he your friend?”

Camille caught the meaning hidden in the question. Was Ryan a special friend, or just a friend? There was no point inlying to the doctor. If she had something which she might have passed onto Ryan, Doctor Porter had to know.

“Ryan and I are together. He is also my personal assistant.”

Saying it out loud sounded so awful, so sleazy. She’d crossed a million lines in taking Ryan to her bed. The newspapers were right. He was her toyboy, and she was nothing more than a billionaire nepo baby cliché.

“So tell me, Camille, when was the last time you had your period?”

Camille reached for the bucket.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

As soon as the IV bag was empty, Doctor Porter took out the needle. She helped Camille into the bathroom. While Camille stripped out of her PJs, the doctor opened a pregnancy test kit, then set it down on the counter top.

“Could you please sit on the toilet and pee onto the stick for me. Then while you’re in the shower I will wait for the results.”

She did as asked. Once Doctor Porter had the test in hand, she left the bathroom, and Camille finally had a precious moment to herself.

Standing under the hot water, she thought back over the past few weeks. All the signs had been there. The nausea. The fatigue.

And I’d been trying to ignore the obvious cause of it.

Placing a hand against the white tiles of the shower, Camille let the water run down her back. Within a matter of minutes she would know for sure.

If I am pregnant what on earth am I going to tell Ryan?

Taking her time to dry off, she slipped into a clean pair of PJs, and brushed out her long blonde hair.

There had been that one night. One moment when they had let things slip.

Back in the bedroom, Doctor Porter was waiting for Camille. She nodded toward the pregnancy test. “It’s positive. But I’m assuming you’d already guessed that it would be.”

“Yes. So how far along am I?”

“Well based on when you had your last period, I would say six to seven weeks.”

Camille slowly nodded. She was pregnant. As soon as Bryce and the doctor had left, she was going to sit Ryan down and give him the news that he was about to become a father.

“Thank you. Is there anything I should be doing?”

“The obvious one is to stay off alcohol. I would also avoid sushi, soft cheeses, and go easy on the coffee. But the main thing is to get as much rest as you can. When you are ready, we can make an appointment to go through a few more things.”

She followed Doctor Porter out into the main living area. Bryce and Ryan both rose from where they had been sitting on the couch. Her cousin looked to the doctor. “How is our patient?”

“The IV fluids I gave her have helped with the vomiting, and she’s rehydrated. No need for any hospitals.”

Ryan came to Camille’s side, and took a hold of her hand. When he gave it a squeeze, she had to fight back tears. Her plans hadn’t included this little slip up.

Doctor Porter turned to Camille. “You will be hearing from me, but in the meantime if you need anything, please call. I am available 24/7.”

She nodded to Bryce. “Will you please show me out?”
