It started as a small whisper at the back of my mind, the call of the master hellspawn. He’d sent his minions to destroy our defences, to make us weak before his arrival. I felt him approach from somewhere deep in the forest.

At the same time, I heard helicopters flying in overhead. Their blades pounded in the sky and I sensed a familiar tug deep in my chest that was only ever associated with one man.

Levi.

There was no way to know which would reach the doorway to our coven first.

Another swing from my sword and another monster decapitated. Two more took its place. The heat they generated was relentless, the sweat trickling down my back to pool at the indent at the bottom of my spine.

Ladders fell down from the helicopters and figures in black moved down them, firing weapons into the forest.

“Who the hell is that?” Dean shouted.

“That is the lycans.”

“What?” he screeched. “We can’t defend ourselves from both of them. We need to evacuate this base. Now!”

I grabbed his arm. “I think they’re coming to help us.”

He glared at me.

“You need to trust me,” I said. “I didn’t lie before.”

The muscle in his jaw ticked as he stared me down. “What the fuck? I’m sick of this existence anyway. Whatever comes next could be more exciting.”

Explosions sounded in the forest, followed by massive flashes of light.

Levi knew the hellspawn couldn’t survive the light and was using the weapons they’d designed against the vampires on the creatures.

“Get as many of our people as possible into the castle and start to close the shutters!” I screamed, and kicked another hellspawn back, slicing at it with my sword.

“You heard her! Everyone find shelter right now!” Dean shouted into his communication device. “Code red, code red, all vampires return to base.”

Everyone knew a code red meant the sun or an ultraviolet weapon.

The helicopters came ever closer, and I sensed Levi like a tribal beat in my veins. He was ingrained on my soul, his life linked to mine. Two hearts beating as one. That was the true meaning of mating.

Levi’s wolf appeared at my side, his nose bumping into me. His nose wrinkled at a hellspawn, and he lunged forward to rip its soul from its body. My eyes widened in shock because it never occurred to me that his wolf could do any harm in this non-corporeal form. Obviously, all the rumours about black wolves and their badass powers were true.

One of those massive spider monsters dropped from above me, pinning me to the floor. Its teeth snapped toward me and that scream I heard from others escaped from between my own lips.

Levi’s wolf pounced, his form flickering between gold and black fur. His claws tore into the abdomen of the spider even as his canines latched onto its head and dragged it away from me. His energy strengthened and the golden aura became more solid, fur pushing through until his wolf stood there in all his glory.

He snarled and tossed the spider across the hall, leaping on top of it and decimating the creature until it was nothing more than a mass of disarticulated limbs. He creaked his head from side to side and slowly transformed from beast to man.

I had no idea how he managed it, but he had joined with his wolf to arrive here. In a world of emerging gifts, I wasn’t going to be ungrateful that my prayers had been answered. My mouth dried and my feet stuck to the floor at the sight of him standing there like a dark god of retribution sent to annihilate all in his path.

“Get back.” His voice was a mixture of a growl and a command. He grabbed the sword from my limp fingers, his other hand snaking behind my neck to press a quick, hard kiss on my lips before he pushed me back.

This was not the gentle man who held me and made me feel safe. He was a feral warrior who destroyed everything in his path even though he was naked. Dean shot him a look and then turned to me for guidance. I held my hands up in defeat, so he shrugged and fought alongside Levi.

Other lycans broke through the hellspawn, some firing UV weapons, and others wielding swords. Radar fought his way to beside Levi; he was the lycan who came to rescue us in the helicopter all those months ago. When they’d formed a wall between us and the hellspawn, Radar handed Levi a pair of black combat trousers from his backpack.

“Your clothes remained in the helicopter when you disappeared,” Radar explained as Levi tugged the trousers on.

“Any sign of him, Radar?” Levi asked.

“No, there was a massive anomaly on my devices, but it cleared when you performed your magic trick and disappeared from the helicopter. You scared the life out of me, by the way”.
