“What happened tonight?” I asked, rolling onto my tummy to stare up at him as I rested on his powerful abdominal muscles.

“The full moon can make our wolves a little crazy. You were acting scared earlier when I found you and it activated his protective instincts.”

My lips curved into a seductive grin. “He was protecting me by having sex with me?”

“He was protecting you by marking you with our scent.” Levi groaned and covered his face with his hands. “This has never happened to me before. I thought it was just a tale.”

The sky began to lighten. “I need to get back.”

“Stay with me.” His fingers threaded through mine, his eyes pleading.

“Where would we go?”

He jumped up and collected all our clothes. “Hold these.”

He transformed into his wolf and swung his head to indicate I climb onto his back.

“Let me get dressed,” I said.

He rolled his amber wolf eyes at me. “It’s not getting any darker.”

“Fine,” I muttered, climbing onto his back with our clothes under my chest.

His fur caressed my body, and I snuzzled closer. He took off through the forest, me clinging to him as air rushed around me.

He stopped at the entrance to a cave and I slid off.

He changed back into a man. My bite marks were visible on different areas of his body, his back flayed by my nails digging into it in passion. My body had so much of his DNA on and in me that they should put a yellow tape around me and declare me a crime scene.

“What the hell did we do last night?” I asked, my fingers tracing over one of his wounds.

His hand gripped my waist to tug me against his hard body. “We did what was natural and gave into our instincts.”

My skin began to prickle as daylight approached. Levi lifted me and carried me into the cave to a back chamber where no light would enter.

He hunted through the pocket of his jeans that were lying on the floor and pulled out a beautiful multi-faceted crystal point.

He lowered his gaze. “I found this in the river and thought you’d like it.”

No one ever gave me presents, so it made this crystal extra special to me.

My hands covered his. “I love it.”

His cheeks burned but his eyes shone with pleasure as I took my gift.

With the danger outside, we lay for hours sharing stories about our lives. We were two parts of a complicated whole. Neither or us fitted into our worlds, but together we’d found somewhere we belonged.

Today began a pattern of us sneaking away from our lives to be together. In the facility, I avoided everyone and locked myself in with Kimber when I was there. In the forest, I spent every moment with Levi.

He didn’t change my life, he shattered my world, slowly rebuilding it with him at the centre. One summer wasn’t enough, yet the sands of time ran faster and faster, stealing minutes until there were only a few days left.

I wanted to scream and escape my life, but I felt the breath of my fate on my neck, the noose slowly closing around my throat until it fully ensnared me.
