“I’m about to die, and I’ve never been kissed. Would you…”

His lips descended on mine before I had the chance to finish my sentence, his tongue finding its way into my mouth to stroke against mine. He tasted of the wildness of nature and a hint of something uniquely Levi. His domination stole my breath, and he devoured me in a way I never anticipated.

He finally broke away, pressing one last kiss on my swollen lips. “We definitely would have been lovers even though we were born enemies.”

He wrapped me in his arms again, one hand splayed over my stomach.

Life was such an asshole to allow me to finally find someone who sparked my interest, then kill us on the same day.

Soon I was unable to feel my fingers and toes, my body growing cold even as an inferno burned deep in my core. I felt his heavy body slump against mine, his limbs slack and fingers no longer gripping me.

“Please,” I whispered to everyone and no one. “Please don’t let us die.”

Darkness crept closer like a harbinger of doom. My fangs hung low in my mouth. The scent of his blood surrounded me, the beat of his heart coaxing me to taste him one more time. I had never experienced anything like his blood earlier. If I was going to die, I may as well live my last few moments. I succumbed to one last temptation, biting into Levi’s flesh.

White light blinded me, and Levi jolted behind me, his canines scraping my skin.

I wanted him, needed him with an appetite that demanded to be satisfied. His blood flowed through me, nourishing and strengthening my body. I felt his emotions strumming through me, his fear and attraction matching mine. Did feeding from the vein always feel like this? I’d been missing out and our leaders were lying to us.

My tongue lapped at the wound, desperately trying to get the last few precious drops of blood as his flesh closed over. Desire snaked deep in my belly as physical hunger was replaced by another type of appetite, my flesh burning for an alternative reason to the fever that gripped me a few moments ago.

My fangs throbbed and the flesh between my legs pulsed. For the first time in my life, I finally felt like a vampire. Never before had I believed that a vampire could harm a human and drain them, but right now I wanted to tear into Levi’s flesh and feast on him. I wanted to sacrifice myself to the call of flesh and blood and scream my desire into the night. If I didn’t grab control of my emotions and hunger right now, the poison in my bite was the least threat to Levi’s existence.

Fire burned through my veins like molten lava flowing in streams down the side of the volcano. Levi shivered, his arm tightening around me. He wasn’t what I expected, considering he was the first lycan I’d ever met. They were supposed to be evil incarnations of the devil, wild creatures with no conscience or remorse.

He was just a boy who’d been out tracking the local wildlife.

Another wave of torturous hunger crashed into me, and I bit into my lip to stop me from vocalising my agony. My muscles cramped, and nerve endings felt like they’d been singed. It took what energy remained in me to stop myself from plunging my fangs back into his tempting flesh. The burning pain in my arm had disappeared, but now a new agony had emerged.

Levi moved behind me, his canines scraping over my skin again to release a beast inside me. She screamed for blood and something else, an ache forming between my legs. I sunk the tips of my fangs into him just to taste the delicious deep flavour of him. Sensations flooded my numb body in a cascade that found every extremity.

“Levi?” I called him softly.

His face nestled in the curve between my neck and shoulder. “Yeah?”

“What’s happening?”

He moved behind me, his arm curving around to drag us into a sitting position. I swear that someone else was in control of my body because I flung my leg over his to straddle his hips. We stared at each other, Levi’s hands finding my waist to steady me. His mouth descended on mine and I was drowning under another type of sensation. Did all lycans contain this addictive taste? Was this part of their lure that made humans want to seek them out to be bitten?

Levi’s hands clamped onto my waist as we lost ourselves in each other. Our tongues warred with each other, even as we surrendered. Something happened with that last bite that healed the poison inside me. Levi’s touch was stronger as well, more determined.

Time became inconsequential, measured in kisses as opposed to minutes. It was only when my skin began to prickle with that familiar heated sensation that I stiffened and pulled back.

“Daylight,” I whispered in horror, my eyes widening to stare out the mouth of the cave. “My home is too far away.”

I stared out into the jungle, and up toward the sky that was lightening to the east. How could I have been so stupid to lose track of the time? It was engrained in every vampire from the moment they could walk to never get caught outside close to dawn.

“Get to the back of the cave,” Levi said.

I scrambled to the far recess of the cave and pressed myself against the wall, my hands braced behind me. Fear raced up and down my spine in waves until I felt nauseous and ready to vomit.

“The sunlight will burn me until all that’s left is ash,” I said, gazing beyond Levi’s shoulder at outside.

He grabbed my arms, shaking me until he had my full attention. “It’s going to be a tight fit in here, but I’m going to change into my wolf. He’ll close off the entrance to the cave. Okay?”
