I had never realised how much I missed digging my fangs into his flesh until they sank deep into his neck. My tongue lapped the blood into my mouth as I groaned. His cock hardened under my ass even as my nails lengthened into claws to hold onto him.

“You always taste of honey and spice and seduction,” I muttered against his throat. “Nothing else tastes like you.”

A growl emerged from Levi, his hands latching onto my hips to hold me against him.

My fangs sunk deep into his neck again as I feasted on his blood. In the past, this was when he would have thrust into me and we would have lost ourselves in the ancient dance of our bodies. All I could do was cling to his strength and squirm on top of him in desperate need of friction.

I’d never stopped wanting him, never forgotten his taste or scent. He smelt of dark decadence and chocolate, with a hint of the forest after the rain. Wildness. Levi always reminded me of the wild element of nature. Nothing would ever tame him because his wolf was a dominant asshole. I wanted to feel his fur under my fingers, the sting of his canines biting into my shoulder.

Eventually, I pushed myself up and stared down at him with the tips of my fangs still on display. He reached out and ran his thumb under them, his own canines showing.

“You shouldn’t have told me,” I said. “Now that I know, Castus will be able to see you and what you told me in my memories through my blood.”

“Did he not see me before?” he queried.

“Mum showed me how to suppress some of my memories so that Castus could only see parts of them. He never knew what Sam looked like, so I pretended he’d been the man I was in a relationship with that summer since Sam would never be able to refute my story.”

Levi looked nothing like a vamp, but what was I supposed to say when Castus wanted to claim a virginity that didn’t exist anymore? He was a sanctimonious asshole with a preference for young virgins. There was no doubt in my head he knew I was hiding something, but he was biding his time to pounce. Ten years in the military had taken the blinders off my eyes. I trusted no one and nothing unless I’d seen it myself. Even then I tended to question it.

Levi easily lifted me under the ass, then moved us to the back of the cave so I was sprawled on his chest.

“So, what do you think these creatures are?” he asked, his fingers drawing patterns on my back.

“No idea. The only creature I’ve seen with tentacles is an octopus and the dark slimy arm that reached for my neck was more humanoid.”

He stroked my hair, and butterflies invaded my stomach.

“We’ve been taking major casualties, especially in these swamp areas. Radar had different scanning equipment that showed where I felt something brushing against my leg as registering as dense black on the scanner. Why did it never attack us?” he wondered out loud.

I turned my head toward him until our noses touched. “I felt something as if it was swimming beside me. It only attacked after I was hit by a blaster from a sniper in a tree.”

“So, it was either startled or attracted by the smell of your blood?”

I grimaced. “It would be the first creature who actually enjoyed my blood.”

The asshole grinned at me, amber flashing in his eyes. “No one likes your blood because no one but your mate should be drinking it.”

“Mymatedoesn’t have fangs,” I said.

“That won’t stop me from biting you. I imagine if any other vampires tried to bite me, I’d taste awful to them, yet you kept muttering about nectar every time I feed you.”

“Levi,” I said with a sigh, giving him my best stern glare. “We’re different species. We can’t be mated.”

“Yet we are.” He gave me an exasperated look, grabbing my face in his strong hands before his lips met mine in a bruising kiss. We always worked best when we removed the rest of the world around us. I didn’t care that he was a lycan, or my enemy, or he howled at the full moon.

I closed my eyes and let him take control, returning his kiss like I was starving, and he was the last item on the menu. He devoured me with his mouth as his fingers latched into my hair, holding me in place.

The sensation of his lips on mine, his tongue demanding entry had lived in my memory for years. There were nights that I lay under the moon, and imagined Levi staring up at the same sky. He told me that every time he looked at the moon, he would think of me. There wasn’t a night that the moon shone on my skin that I didn’t sense him.

My energy began to wane, even with Levi’s blood pumping through my veins. This toxin burned through the potency of his blood quickly, leaving me weak. No wonder so many lycans and vampires were dead. It was taking both of our immortal gifts to keep me alive.

“Hey.” Levi cupped my face in his hands as I drew away. “You need to rest.”

“What are we going to do, Levi?”

He contemplated my question, his eyes on the majestic sunset outside that had set the sky on fire. “If you’re feeling up to it tomorrow, why don’t we go and catch one of these creatures and see exactly what the hell they are?”

“They’ve killed a lot of wolves and vampires,” I replied. “What makes you think they won’t kill us too?”
