Suddenly I wanted to know the answer because Levi affected me in a way that no one ever had before. For the first time in my life, I finally wanted to be with someone sexually and it left me feeling vulnerable and insecure. He was a wolf and none of this made sense anymore, but all I had to guide me were my emotions. I wanted to pin him to the ground and kiss him senseless before offering myself to him. For the past few years, I’d avoided relationships because I wanted someone to like me for me instead of what they could gain from a relationship with me. My mother was an important scientist and people were always asking me about what she was working on.

He nudged me with his shoulder. “I think I could live with that.”

My cheeks blazed red and I could almost feel the heat radiating from them. “I guess I could look out for a black wolf in the forest when I’m out for my exercise at night.”

We could get executed for even sitting here chatting. Our conversation was more than just talking; we were arranging to meet each other, and not in battle. The fact that he wanted to see me again made my heart beat a little faster, and strange fluttering to appear in my stomach.

“Come on, little vampire.” Levi got to his feet and held out his hand. “I’ll navigate you through this part of the forest. Our wolves sometimes hunt close to here.”

His fingertips touched mine every so often as we walked together through the forest basin. I stopped now and then to show him a specific flower or moth. If ever I doubted that he’d been out tracking through nature when we found each other, it vanished while watching the pure joy he experienced talking about tiny purple flowers or moths with fluffy antennae.

Seeing some plump berries, I plucked one and held it to his lips. “Try these. They’re my favourite.”

What the hell was wrong with me and why was I feeding a lycan berries? I picked another for myself, and the fruity sweetness exploded on my tongue. My jaw dropped when Levi licked the excess juice from my thumb. His simple gesture left me breathing erratically and my heart stumbling over its beat.

A noise in the undergrowth startled us and Levi pushed me against a tree, his body covering mine. It was only when the risk of discovery passed that I looked down and saw the way our bodies pressed together. His eyes were wide, and pupils dilated.

“Fuck it,” Levi muttered and swooped in for a kiss.

My mouth opened as soon as his tongue flicked across the seam of my lips. My fingers found his hair and I dragged him impossibly closer. I wanted him more than I’d ever wanted anything before in my life. My fang pierced his lip and I moaned into his mouth as his flavour intoxicated me, my body arching up into his.

My hands descended from Levi’s hair to roam down his back, while his fingers explored my body.

“If you keep doing that, we’ll end up having sex against this tree,” he muttered against my lips.

I froze and my head tilted back. “Do you think our species can have sex?”

A salacious smile curved his lips. “We’re both people and have the relevant equipment, so I’m going to vote yes. Want to try and find out?”

My gaze locked with his. “And if I vote yes too?”

He pressed into me until I had no doubt exactly how he felt about that since he was naked and ready to go. “Then I’d suggest we form the first interspecies research group into sexual encounters.”

“I do live in a research facility, so I really should be involved in the study.”

“You free tomorrow night and we can have our first meeting?”

My fingers skimmed over his ass and the muscles tensed before he ground his erection against me. “I’ll clear my calendar, since it’s for research purposes.”

His smirk made butterflies cascade through my stomach. I smiled back and we could barely kiss we were both grinning so much.

A howl sounded in the distance. Levi’s body tensed, his attention moving to the wolves.

“Let me get you safely home,” he said. “I wouldn’t want you injured before we can carry out our first experiment.”

We walked toward my facility, and just as it came into view, I pulled Levi into some tall bushes. “The vampires in the facility tend not to go beyond this point. Meet you here tomorrow night?”

The howls were getting closer. Levi pressed his forehead to mine as he pushed me against the tree,

“Tomorrow night,” Levi confirmed, stealing one last kiss.

We both stepped back, unable to take our eyes from each other. Nature had created us as adversaries, but I would never be able to harm the man in front of me. My family would disown me if they ever found out what I intended to do. Yet none of those facts could divert me from the course I was on.

Last night we were enemies; tonight we’d found friendship, and I had no doubt that tomorrow night would herald us being lovers. Whatever was happening was beyond both of our controls. We’d been infected with a lust that screamed for us to sacrifice ourselves to our passion and throw everything we thought we knew away.

I blew Levi a kiss and disappeared into the forest.

In my peripheral visions, I saw him shift into his wolf and run.
