We were all inside and protected by shutters, but my vampire senses could detect the daylight flooding outside even though it was the middle of the night. Screeches and screams sounded as his weapons illuminated the darkness.
Levi’s eyes met mine.
“Ready?” he asked.
I nodded, my hand finding his.
If this was the day my coven fell and we all died, then I would do it with Levi at my side.

The scent of rancid blood permeated the air and made my stomach churn with terror. In previous battles, I fought to exist. Now, I needed to survive.
Levi wielded his sword like a dark god of olden times, hellbent on death and destruction. Many of the wolves fought with huge battle axes, while the vampires preferred blasters and thin-bladed swords.
I felt the presence of the master hellspawn like a caress on my skin. His proximity left me unsettled, my blood drawn to him by an invisible magnetism that I could barely resist.
Levi spun toward me, as if sensing my confusion. His hand clamped onto my arm.
“Where is he?” he demanded, his tone low and husky.
Part of me wanted to deny it, but I knew exactly where he was. My body was being pulled to him in waves.
“Over there.” I pointed in the direction that I desperately wanted to crawl in.
Levi grabbed my arms and gave me a brief shake. “Stay here.”
The full force of his mating bond bored into my body through his golden stare—claiming me.
He reminded me of a force of nature as he tore his way across the battlefield, destroying everything in his path. Levi was my greatest strength and ultimate weakness; he always had been. Fear rattled in my stomach like a snake unfurling to slither through my veins. I sent a silent prayer to anyone who might be listening to keep him safe.
I lost myself in the rhythm of the battle, the ebb and flow of bodies clashing together. The hellspawn were quick and strong, their soldiers relentless. Even as we hacked off limbs they surged forward. The only thing that stopped them was the removal of their heads.
My sword cut through the neck of another bipedal hellspawn. It slumped forward, oozing black blood over the ground.
“Down,” Radar shouted, and I ducked. Lightning flashed from the weapon he held, to arc over my head. Another hellspawn exploded.
“What the fuck was that?” I shouted, my eyes trained on the remains on the ground.
“One of my latest inventions.” His grin and bright eyes displayed his excitement that his new weapon worked. He blew the tip that was still smoking and moved forward into the fight.
“Fucking psychopath,” I muttered, kicking one of the small angry hellspawn that tended to bite ankles out of my way.
Every nerve and muscle in my body manoeuvred me through the fighting against my will. I’d felt Castus summoning me in the coven, but this was stronger, an irresistible pull that demanded my obedience.
Levi caught my attention first, then the master hellspawn came into focus. Excitement and terror spiralled through my stomach. My mind rebelled against the command to keep moving forward even as my body obeyed.
Almost as if he knew I was there, Levi turned his tortured eyes in my direction. His mouth formed the word ‘no’ as he tried to put himself between me and the hellspawn who summoned me.
“My child, you’ve finally arrived,” the master said. “I was trying to tell this dog that you are bound to me just as I am to you. I would be able to find you anywhere on this planet now that I have touched you.”
A dark and sadistic smile broadened his lips.
All these people were in danger because of me. I wanted to scream at the injustice of my life, to run as far and fast as I could until there was only Levi and me.
Levi’s claws dug into my arm, his will trying to override this compulsion in my blood.
