Page 3 of Midnight Torment

Megan had been my secret fantasy for five years. From the moment she wandered into my life, she had stolen an integral part of me that ensured I was only complete when I was with her.

“Jordan?” Her upper torso canted back so she could peer up at me.

I instinctively tucked those unruly curls behind her ear. “I just needed to reassure myself that you’re okay,” I said and her forehead creased in a frown.

“Are you going to tell me what is going on?”

“I just had a shaky moment in Cuba. You’re my grounding force.” The only way to stop Megan burrowing deep to find the true answer was to distract her.

My lips ghosted over hers until her eyes fluttered shut. Her fingers gripped my top as I deepened the kiss, my mouth teased her until she moaned. I was playing with fire because she would remember later and the interrogations would begin again.

Right now, I needed her heat to warm the chill in my soul from that encounter. I rarely felt fear anymore, but in Cuba the hand of death had rested on my shoulder and sent a shiver rippling down my spine.

I would find every single threat against this woman and eradicate every single one until they were all dead.

Chapter Two

Megan

Jordan never reacted like this—ever. He was always calm no matter what, but I could feel his emotions slamming into me in a cascade that swept me away. I burrowed my head deep into his chest and sank into the warmth of his affection, since I had craved it for so long.

“Is everything okay?” I asked, tilting back to watch his reactions. “Jordan?”

Jordan tucked my hair behind my ear in his signature move. “I just needed to reassure myself that you’re okay,” he replied.

My emotions stilled because that could only mean one thing—the danger had crept ever closer to us. “Are you going to tell me what is going on?”

“I just had a shaky moment in Cuba. You’re my grounding force.” Trouble brewed in his stormy grey eyes before a flicker of a foreign emotion shone.

His head dipped and his lips skimmed over mine. He did this when he wanted to end a conversation, because he knew how much I lost myself in his kiss. His lips were soft and coaxing, leading me away from whatever he was trying to distract me from. His fingers combed through my hair as he canted my head back, his tongue invading my mouth.

I finally broke away, my lips pursing to taste him as I brought my gaze up to meet his. “Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”

His expression froze.

I poked him in the middle of the chest. “No more trying to distract me from the truth. We agreed that we were a partnership and would share information.”

Jordan tried to glance away but I caught his chin in a move that he had used repeatedly in the Twilight Rooms. His eyes widened when he realised what I’d done. I was no longer the submissive who would accept his explanation or order to do as I was told.

“We are a partnership,” I repeated, ensuring that I kept eye contact with him.

“Megan,” he groaned. “Can we just leave this?”

“No.” I refused to back down when he needed me to stand at his side. I had finally found my place in his life and I refused to give that position up.

He sighed and rolled his eyes. He could try all his techniques, but I was just as stubborn as he was. I fixed him with my raised eyebrow glare and his lips twitched.

“I preferred you as a submissive,” Jordan said.

“No, you don’t,” I chastised him, grabbing his hand and dragging him over to the bed to push him onto his back. I climbed on top of him with a grin, wiggling my ass on his groin. “Now, who upset you?”

His finger traced down the strap of my vest top, and over the swell of my breast. “One of the goons in Cuba knew that you and I were together. Some bad guy we’ve been watching has been watching us.”

“It was bound to happen eventually, Jay. We’re always together.” I leaned down to press a soft kiss to his lips. “That’s what happens when you’re a couple.”

Jordan narrowed his eyes at me as if I was being a smartass. I refused to give into him and my grin widened.
