“It’s a deal. Let me kill the bad guys and then we’ll go and get ice cream and sit on the steps of Covent Garden and eat them.”

“You mean like a proper date?” she queried, a small smile playing on her lips.

I rolled my eyes at her. “Yes, like a proper date. We could even catch a show in the West End.”

“I think I’d like that. Not the part about killing the bad guys. That sounds a bit gruesome.” She wrinkled her nose up at the notion of killing someone.

I saw Xavier’s car weave his way through traffic.

It was game time. Winner survives and the loser dies.

Scared seemed too small a word. Terrified. Petrified. Frightened. Panicked. Take your pick and then multiply it up a thousand times. Flocks of bats beat against my chest in a warning tribal beat even as I tried to swallow the sickness that crept up my throat.

Jordan was in danger, men were following us, my laptop had been hacked, and I was strapped into this seat like it was some elaborate device from the Twilight Rooms used to restrain and torment. All I wanted to do was go home and crawl under the duvet until everything was right in the world again.

“Zee’s behind us,” Jordan said, his gaze constantly moving to the rear view mirror. “We’re nearly at our destination.”

Which meant we were about to sink into greater danger.

“Maybe we should just keep driving?” I suggested. “They’ll get bored and go home.”

Jordan shot me an incredulous look. “These men only have one focus because they only get paid when they provide proof of death.”

My body froze. The idea of Jordan being dead made my heart drop into my stomach. There was no way I could live in a world where he didn’t exist.

“You’re frightening me,” I whispered, trying to sink lower in my seat.

Jordan glanced over at me and grabbed my hand. “Nothing is going to happen to you. Zee and Ash are directly behind us. They will keep you safe no matter what.”

“And who keeps you safe?” I asked. “You promised me we’d grow old together.”

“And I’ll try and keep that promise, but my first priority is you.” He was crazy if he thought I would accept that option.

“Do I get a gun, since you taught me to shoot?”

The car swerved for the first time since he turned his head fully in my direction. “No, since the three of us are here, you will sit that sexy ass in the car and not move until I tell you it’s safe to come out.”

“Or you could sit your sexy ass in the car with me,” I mumbled.

Jordan sighed and I felt the weight of his stare landing on me. “There is no way I would sit out of the fight that involves my woman.”

His woman.

There would never be a time that those words in his rich, husky voice wouldn’t cause flutters deep in my stomach. Even now, when I was drowning in terror, he still had the ability to melt my defences.

“You better not be injured at the end of this,” I warned.

“Or?” I saw his lips twitch.

“Don’t forget my body is a trained weapon,” I replied. “And I have a vibrator that I’m not afraid to use to defend myself.”

Jordan chuckled. “You do have that scary-looking one with the rubber spikes on it in your apartment bedroom.” He winked at me and a flush warmed my cheeks.
