“He named the Midnight Rooms and Xavier chose Twilight for the play rooms above ground level,” Flynn said. “Jay has always had an affinity with the darkness.”
Flynn’s phone pinged. He lifted it and scanned through the message. “Jay’s back in Cuba. They’re flying home tomorrow and then you’ll be jetting off to South Africa. He’s just checking on your fake passport.”
I couldn’t stop the smile that spread over my face. Jordan was coming home. That was better that Christmas and my birthday all at once. In the few days he’d been gone, I’d ached for him. It was the silly things I missed most, like the sound of his feet padding through the house in the darkness, his deep baritone in the shower, and the way he chuckled when I least expected it. They were the sounds of home.
“Have you ever been to South Africa?” I asked.
“A few years ago. I was on assignment at the time.”
Considering the business he was in, I didn’t want to press him any further for details. “I was going to ask about the wildlife, but maybe not,” I replied.
Flynn threw his head back and laughed. “I don’t spend my entire time in a country killing people. Even criminals take the time to enjoy the countryside and become tourists for a few days.”
I rolled my eyes. “Do you learn new moves from watching the lions stalk and take down their prey?”
He shook his head and started typing on his phone. “Yeah, I often race across the savannah on all fours trying to tackle a bad guy to the ground instead of just shooting him.”
My phone rang and I launched myself at it. “Hello?”
“Hey, little butterfly, just checking in.” My eyes closed and I sat for a moment savouring the sound of his voice. “You still there?”
“Hmmm. Give me a sec. It’s been a long few days without hearing from you.” I stood up and wandered over to the window to overlook the gardens. If I’d been back at home, I would have been able to watch for Simon.
“You doing okay?” Jordan asked.
“I am now.” It was the truth. I couldn’t sleep until I’d heard his voice and knew that he was alive. “Flynn says you heading home soon.”
“Yeah, we’re back in Cuba and have a few errands to run and then we’re on the next flight out of here to London.” His sigh reached from halfway across the world and sounded in my ear. “I really fucking miss you.”
“I’m going to have to buy another packet of batteries,” I joked.
His laugh washed over me and settled in my soul. “The poor sod will be on life support again.”
Gone were the days of me pleasuring myself. His cock had ruined me and now my battery operated boyfriends were sitting redundant in my drawer. I would give up sex for a month just to fall asleep in Jordan’s arms.
“Maybe you can give him mouth to mouth to resuscitate him,” I said.
“Yeah, that’s a hard no, baby. My mouth is at your command but it’s definitely not going there.” He sighed again. “I fucking hate being so far away from you.”
“Me too,” I whispered. “Flynn was just showing me your racing cars.” I decided to change the course of this conversation or I’d start crying again. Flynn motioned to stop me in the background.
“Has he indeed?” Jordan queried. “Why would he be doing that?”
“Because I may be a divorce solicitor, but I am still a solicitor and he needed my legal prowess.” I smiled at Flynn and he glowered at me. “Does that mean you’re going to take me for a spin around the track in one of your rally cars? You could teach me to outmanoeuvre a tail.”
They had those sleek IndyCar models, but they also had rally cars that they raced for fun.
Jordan laughed. “Um, that would be a no. I’ve seen your driving. There is no way you’re taking one of our babies onto a track at speed. Our team would go mental.”
“I haven’t been home to feed Simon in a week,” I replied, ignoring his slur on my driving. There was nothing wrong with being slow and safe.
“He’s a wild animal. I think he’ll be fine. Beth is probably feeding the nefarious rodent, and he’s sleeping it off in our window box.” I smiled as I imagined his scowl at Simon in his favourite window box.
“Maybe Flynn could take me home and I could feed him to make sure he’s okay?”
“Or maybe you could sit your sexy ass down and wait for me to get home.” His growly tone sent shivers rippling down my spine.
“Or?” I arched an eyebrow even though he couldn’t see it. My hip braced me against the window frame and I closed my eyes for a moment, imagining he was here with me.
