I shouldn’t feel safe with him since he had killed the other two men and covered up all the deaths, but I did. Sometimes the devil was evil with glowing red eyes and horns, and sometimes it was better the devil you knew.

Flynn was my very own devil who had found his way into my life, and I couldn’t help but think that I was glad we had survived the night and those men had died.

Chapter Nineteen

Flynn

Charlotte was quiet, her gaze never once moving from the countryside as we drove away from her home. When Cassandra had seen the dark side of Xavier’s life she had run away. Megan had taken some time to accept that Jordan had two sides to him, so I expected Charlotte to run screaming. Instead, she sat beside me, lost in her head.

She was stronger than anyone ever gave her credit for.

Pixie decided to start protesting from the backseat and that pulled Charlotte from her thoughts as she turned in her seat to comfort her.

“She hates travelling in the car. I’m going to have to get her treats for this.” Charlotte continued to fuss over the diva in a fur coat.

I didn’t want to point out that Pixie found a situation every single day that required her to have treats to get over her trauma. That cat had Charlotte wrapped around her furry paw and had the secret heart of a demon who wanted to enslave the world.

I let her coo and baby talk the furry diva while I silently seethed. So far, I had found ways to keep myself from thinking about the fact that she could be seriously injured, raped, or dead right now. Those men had broken into her house, knowing she was there with the purpose of theft, abduction, and terror. Instead, they found me.

I wanted to go back there and kill them all again for putting that fear in her big blue eyes. The need to seek vengeance pulsed through me. Who the fuck did they think they were coming after my woman?

My fist tightened on the steering wheel and that ice-cold rage that I thought suppressed broke free. I had channelled it in the past when I carried out a hit, the remnants from the pain my father caused allowing me to become a cold-blooded killer for hire.

“You’re going the wrong way,” Charlotte said from beside me, making me frown in confusion.

“I don’t think so,” I muttered.

“Mum lives in the centre of London. You missed the turn-off.”

“I told you that you were coming to stay with me,” I snapped, my temper boiling over for a moment. “I can’t protect you if you’re staying with Victoria. They would look for you there.”

“If Mum is at risk, then we need to go there.” She looked out the window as if she possessed the power to teleport there.

“I’ll message Jordan when I get home. Nothing will happen until they establish they’ve lost their men. He has safehouses or he can put a security patrol with her.”

“You told the guys I was staying with Mum,” she insisted.

My lips pursed together for several seconds to prevent me snapping at her again. “I told them that because our relationship is supposed to be a secret. They were already questioning my story in their head, so if I told them I was taking you home with me, they wouldn’t be long working out that we’re sleeping in the same bed.”

She sat sideward in her seat and studied me. “You confuse me.”

I barked out a laugh. “Join the club. I confuse myself.”

“Should I worry that I’m going to a house no one knows the location of?” Her tone was light and teasing.

“Nah, I’ve already got rid of all the serial killers in the neighbourhood. Too many of us and people think they’re at a convention or visiting death row.”

The average woman would be opening the door and trying to jump to safety, but Charlotte crawled closer to me, her hand reaching out for mine.

“Are you going to kill everyone who upsets me?” she asked.

“Maybe.” I glanced at her. “It depends if they make you cry because I don’t cope with that.”

“Sometimes you feel better when you cry,” she replied.

“Mum didn’t. After Dad left us, she cried herself to sleep every night while I lay pretending to sleep.” I clamped my lips together to stop my life story from tumbling out.
