“We really need to remember to use condoms,” I replied. “My appointment for my injection is in two days, but we still need to be careful for a week or so after it.”
I didn’t realise Pixie had escaped from the back of the house again. Flynn had sworn she was opening doors herself. She howled and pounced from under the legs of the coffee table. Flynn managed to cover his semi-erect cock before she attacked it like a scratching pole.
“I think you upset my pussy,” I said as she ran from the room.
He rolled onto his side, his fingers finding my clit. He stared at me as he traced small circles on it until I was tilting my hips again and moaning. He leaned forward, his lips brushing mine. “I think your pussy still likes me.”
I tried to give him a reprimanding stare, but he laughed and pulled me closer to him, my head resting on his chest as we lay in front of the fire. My eyes began to droop after a few moments and I snuggled closer.
In my dream, I clung to Flynn, my leg over his and my hand splayed on his stomach. “I love you,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his chest.
His arms tightened around me as he kissed my forehead.
Far from reality, I was allowed to voice my feelings, accept that I was falling for him hard and fast, and there was no one to remind me of the rules.
In my dreams, I was allowed to love him freely, and he was able to return that love.

Chapter Twenty-Five
Flynn
“I love you.” Charlotte’s words were softly spoken and everything inside me froze until I realised she was sleeping, her eyes closed and her breathing even.
I swept her mass of curls from her shoulder and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
She couldn’t love me,I argued with myself. We’d only been together a few days. The truth came crashing down around me. I’d known her for several months, and we’d given in to temptation after a few weeks. She was the longest relationship I’d ever had, and I was nowhere near done with her. Not even close.
I studied her sleeping face. Her beauty had been the first aspect of her I noticed until I got to know her. She was funny, clever, sensitive, strong, and fierce. All those and more. How she stuck my arrogant ass in her life was a mystery to me.
What did love feel like? I knew that I loved Mum and my grandparents, but what was love in a relationship like? I knew I really, really liked Charlotte, and wanted her in my bed and life, but marriages and relationships didn’t last. Dad had destroyed Mum’s and my life when he threw us out and walked away. If you loved someone, you would never be able to do that.
I stared at the ceiling until sleep claimed me.
Over the next few weeks, I noticed Charlotte tended to talk in her sleep. Sometimes just a few words or muttering. Other times, she confessed her love. The first time she said it, I froze. Now I found myself wanting her to say it because it calmed a beast that paced inside me, clawing its way to the surface.
Today was the first race of the season with all the alterations to my baby. Charlotte had changed so much since she arrived in my life, both personally and professionally. I poured coffee while Charlotte paced around the kitchen. I’d gotten used to her moving seamlessly around my house, making it into a home with her presence.
Every day I contemplated what love meant. I watched Jordan, Xavier, and Ash with the women in their lives. I saw them move down the road of domesticity and enjoying every single stage of it. Was there something wrong with me that that road terrified me? Yet, Charlotte lived in my house every day and slept in my bed every night. What was the difference between me and them?
“You look worried,” Charlotte said. “Are you thinking about the race?”
The race didn’t bother me, as there was a speed demon that lived inside me and came out to play when I got behind the wheel of that car. What worried me was that Charlotte would be there and I would be on the track and unable to protect her.
“I tend to get a little distracted before a race,” I deflected.
“Dale will still be pissed after the last time he faced you,” Charlotte replied, coming to stand in front of me. “You need to be careful out there.”
My hands found their natural resting position on her hips to tug her forward. “You need to stay away from your old team. We don’t know who was involved in the raid of your house. The guys will be keeping an eye on you, but no wandering off in case you get in a situation you can’t escape from.”
Her eyes widened in fear and her body swayed toward mine. “They were my family,” she replied in a hushed whisper.
“And now our team is there to support you and keep you safe.”
Those huge blue eyes stared up at me in complete trust. She should run far and fast from me since I was the bogeyman who children feared and parents warned them about. “Stay in public places. No wandering off, and if you need to use the toilet, tell one of our guys.”
“They’re not thinking of accompanying me into the toilets?” She gasped.
