“How?” I asked in a hushed voice.
“Sex,” she replied bluntly. “That’s generally how people get pregnant, unless you artificially inseminated yourself?”
My eyes flew to hers and I shook my head wordlessly.
“It’s a regular occurrence nowadays. I suspect you’re nearly three months, but we’ll need to get a scan to confirm.”
I stared down at my flat stomach, touching it tentatively.
“Most women don’t start to show until their second trimester,” she said, watching me. “I take it this wasn’t planned?”
I tried to speak and had to clear my throat. “No, it wasn’t planned. I just broke up with my partner a few days ago.”
“I see,” Doctor Morrow replied. “Take a few days to absorb the information, and I’ll arrange a scan for you.”
I nodded absently, taking the piece of paper she handed me and shoving it in my bag. Mum’s car was parked outside since she used the Underground to get to work. I sat for several minutes until I felt strong enough to drive home, and then I texted her.
Me:I need you at home.
My phone pinged a few minutes later.
Mum:Everything okay?
Me:I’m pregnant.
Mum:On my way. Stay there until I get home!
Yesterday, I only had myself to worry about. Today, everything had changed. I tried to work out dates in my head and everything came back to that moment we lost control at the garage the first time we had sex.
What the hell was I supposed to do?

Chapter Twenty-Seven
Flynn
“Did you put a tracker in her?” Jordan demanded, sitting opposite me in the office of my second business.
“Why would I do that?” I asked.
“I put one in Megan when she was still my sub.”
I eyeballed him. “Charlotte wasn’t my sub.”
“We both know that the two of you were shacked up.” That laser-sharp gaze of his didn’t leave me. “You had actually learnt to smile for a while. What happened?”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I snapped.
“Flynn.” Jordan pinched the bridge of his nose. “I royally fucked up with Megan, thinking I knew what was best for us. I lost three years with her and had to watch her almost marry another man because in my arrogance I didn’t take any advice. Be better than me.”
My back molars ground together and I stared at the wall for so long that I didn’t think I would find the words to say what happened. “God forgive me, but I tried to stay away from her. She was everything I craved wrapped up in a body designed to make men sin,” I told Jordan. “One minute, I was keeping myself on a tight leash, and the next I had descended into madness. I was with her the night those assholes broke into her house or they probably would have gotten her then. For the first time in forever I could sleep at night, and then, I don’t know—”
“Think, Flynn. Her life is at risk. Why did she run? Was it because of the way you treated her at the race?”
My head snapped up and my brow furrowed. “The way I treated her at the race?” I repeated.
“You barely spoke to her after Dale’s performance and you basically bundled her off without joining everyone for a meal afterward.”
