I beamed. “It’s going great. He got me a bunch of presents, like lingerie and stuff,” I giggled.

“Oh my god, he’s the best!” Emily laughed.

Suddenly the bathroom door near the kitchen opened and Adam walked out, clothed but with a towel still on his head. He looked surprised to see me - he widened his eyes and smiled at me awkwardly. I had almost forgotten that Adam and Jack were good friends, and I was sure Jack told him about all of our drama.

“Hey,” he said to me with feigned enthusiasm.

“Hey Adam,” I smiled. “How’s it goin?”

He looked nervous as he shrugged and smiled at Emily. “It’s going pretty good,” he laughed shyly. “Uh, I was just leaving,” he went on, taking the towel off of his head.

“I’ll walk you out,” Emily jumped up, then winked at me.

I watched them walk to the door and smiled to myself – they were cute together. I picked up a Vogue and started to mindlessly skim through it, trying to pass time as I waited for Emily to come back. I tossed the magazine back down on the end table and stood up and headed for the kitchen, unable to focus on one thing for too long. I opened the fridge as Emily came back in and practically skipped to me.

“He’s so adorable!” she chirped. “He’s literally the sweetest guy I’ve ever met,” she went on, sitting at her small white dining table in the corner of the kitchen, two white chairs around it.

“He’sreallyinto you,” I raised my eyebrows, sitting down as well.

“I know,” she giggled. “So it’s all going good with Michael? Any more stalking from Jack?”

It sounded so casual coming from her.

I sighed and shook my head. “No. Michael said he hanging around my apartment yesterday before he came up, and that hedealtwith it,” I widened my eyes for dramatic effect.

“Hedealtwith it?How?” she mimicked me with her eyes widened.

I shrugged. “I didn’t ask. But get this,” I slapped my hand down on the table. “I went through Michael’s phone because…well, you know how I am,” I shrugged. “And I saw that he was meeting someone today at 5 and paying over 14 grand for something, I don’t know what, and when I asked him about it he said it was a surprise for me but he was gonna wait to give it to me,” I explained in one breath.

Emily’s mouth dropped open. “Are you fucking serious?” she gasped. “Hana, you know what that means, don’t you?”

I was suddenly nervous. “What? No?” I shook my head with hesitation.

Emily’s eyes widened even more. “Han! What does a boyfriend get his girlfriend that costs thousands of dollars and is meant to be a surprise?” she asked with her hands up, seeming frustrated that I was so clueless.

“I don’t fucking know!” I scoffed. “A trip to Paris? A Chanel gown? Jewelry?” I thought aloud, and then it hit me –what ifitis jewelry? A diamond ring? An engagement ring?

Emily stared at me as she watched me realize what it could very well be.

“Yeah,” she nodded, as if reading my mind.

I shook my head at her quickly. “No,” I disagreed. “No,” I repeated, dismissing the whole idea and standing up again.

“No? What do you mean? He just asked you to move in with him; the next step would be to get married, right?” she jumped up, following me into the living room.

I laughed – she may have been right but I was too startled to even think reasonably.

“I don’t know, Em. It’s a bit absurd, but I don’t know,” I shrugged, pacing the room.

I could see Emily sitting down from the corner of my eye, watching me, but I couldn’t stop moving, wringing my hands together, feeling like I was about to burst.

“Okay, maybe not, Han. I don’t know, it was just me speaking without fucking thinking again, as always,” she said softly, as if trying to calm me down.

I stopped and glanced at her, and I was suddenly in a laughing fit, my eyes watering. I could hear Emily laughing along, probably confused as hell, but amused nonetheless. I finally stopped and shrugged, wiping my eyes from the tears.

“Let’s go shopping,” I declared, grabbing my jacket and purse.

“Okay,” she smiled at me skeptically. “Where?” she asked as she got up and walked into her bedroom.
