I nod. “Dario’s men beat you to sharing the information.”
Luca glances at Dario. “Damn! What do we do now, boss?” he asks. “We can hunt that animal and kill him when we find him.”
I disagree with a shake of my head. I might be quick to anger, but I don’t make rash decisions. I only make a move when I’ve thought everything through and decided what the best action will be.
The problem, however, is that I do not have time. With Vivienne and our unborn baby at risk, I need to get rid of anything that could hurt them. Salvatore is the biggest threat. No one can tell what that sneaky bastard is up to.
“We can’t hunt him yet.”
Both Dario and Luca stare at me with stunned expressions.
“This might be a trap for all I can guess,” I explain, pressing a finger to my temple. “Or a distraction. Lead us to another direction while he prepares to strike when we’re the least prepared. Something tells me that asshole hasn’t left the city.”
It’s common sense. The entire city is heavily guarded by men who are on the watch for him. Some of my allies have their men looking for Salvatore as well. Leaving the city would be close to impossible in the situation he is in.
By pretending to leave New York, he thinks, we’ll lower our guards, and he can escape or attack if he’s stupid enough to try.
Dario nods in agreement. “We’ll have to split then. I’ll have my men find out where Salvatore is at…if he’s still in the city.”
“That will do for now.” I shift my attention to Luca. “Call Lorenzo, have him check every flight and ships that has left the country the last couple of days.”
“Yes, boss. Is there anything else you’d like me to do?” Luca asks.
“No.”
“I’ll get to it then.” He leaves the office.
Dario goes on about things I don’t give a shit about; information about the drugs we supplied to Texas last week and all.
All I can think about is how to keep my family safe.
Vivienne’s gazeis pinned on me when I look up from my phone. Her brows are raised, and her forehead is marred with worry. “You haven’t touched your food.”
I glance down at the grilled chicken breast and mashed potatoes on my plate. She’s right; I’ve barely touched my food. I’ve been too busy making calls and replying emails; anything to help me find Salvatore.
I’ve been that way since Dario told me the news of Salvatore’s disappearance this morning. I need to find the bastard before he comes up with a plan that could hurt the people I love and fuck with my entire life.
“Sorry.” I drop my phone on the table and grab my fork. “I was busy with work.”
Vivienne exhales loudly before she eats a spoonful of her mashed potatoes. She wraps her fingers around the glass of water beside her and brings it to her mouth but pauses as the brink of the glass hits her lips. “It’s about Salvatore, isn’t it?”
I don’t try to hide it from her. It’s better she knows the truth so she can be more careful. “He left the city.”
Her reaction is perfect for the situation. Her jaw falls open, and her pupils dilate. “You said you had men looking for him. How is that possible?”
I shrug. “Beats me. I have a feeling he’s still in New York, hiding around somewhere.”
“What do we do?” she asks, finally chugging down the glass of water.
“We?” My brain lights up like a lamp as an idea crosses my mind. “You’re all I care about. You’ll leave the country to Sicily until all of this is over.”
“Sicily?” She scoffs. “Why the hell do I need to go to Sicily?”
“Because it’s the one place I know Salvatore can’t reach you.” The mere thought of Salvatore hurting her makes me clench my fist. “I’ll bring you back as soon as everything is over.
She drops her fork. “And if I don’t want to go?”
“This is not up for negotiation,” I tell her. “You’re leaving tonight.”
