My heart bloomed inside my chest, and my skin felt heated and itchy. I squeezed my thighs together to alleviate the ache between them. My stomach tumbled as his fingers dug deeper to pull me closer like the song suggested.
His eyes held mine, a small smile tugging at his mouth. He drew me into his body, the lyrics on his lips as he whispered them against my ear.
As if in a trance, I leaned up and softly pecked his lips before pulling away and snuggling into his chest. Colt smelled expensive. I knew his cologne was over a thousand dollars per bottle, pricey even for my pocket. It was citrusy with a woody undertone. Beautiful, just like him.
I pressed my face into his throat and discretely breathed in his scent.
As if on cue, I felt his body stiffen.
I knew it wouldn’t last. We’d been here so many times. We’d laugh, get close, have a beautiful moment, and then he’d retreat, physically and mentally. It was unsettling how easily he pulled me in, like the moon pulled the tides, but it was those crazy moments that kept me hoping.
Being close to him like this was equal parts pure bliss and pure torture.
Gently, he pushed my arms down, pulling back to study my face. “Gotta go, Princess. Got work to do. I’ll take you home now.”
I shot him an incredulous look. “I’ve been here thirty minutes. I’ve finished school, and I’m not volunteering at the hospital until Monday. There’s no way I’m going home this early.”
“It’s a bit late for you to be out.” He frowned. “And I don’t like the fact you’re drinkin’.”
My eyes bugged out. “Say what now?”
He flattened his lips.
“Umm. You know I’m twenty-four, right, Colter? Well over the legal drinking age and honey, my dad stopped sending me to bed early when I hit thirteen.”
“Come on,” he cajoled. “Just think you could be outta those heels soon and all tucked up safely in bed.”
I smirked. “Or I could dance with some hottie and ask him to tuck me up instead.”
A low growl emanated from Colt’s throat, and he grabbed my elbow. “Say your goodbyes, Freya.”
“Hey!” Abi called out, stepping toward us. “You going already?”
“Yeah. Colt’s making me go home.” My lips curved seductively. “Isn’t that right, Daddy?”
He visibly gulped.
“You can’t go.” Abi widened her eyes innocently. “Charlie will be here soon.”
I bit back a laugh, almost choking as Colt’s body stiffened.
“Freya!” He growled, cracking his neck from side to side. “Let’s fuckin’ go!” His fingers dug into my arm, and he tugged me toward the exit.
“Bye, babe,” Abi called after us. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t.”
I craned my neck, laughing and stumbled in my heels. “Colt!” I snapped. “Slow down. My shoes are hurting me.”
The next thing I knew, I was hauled into the air, and my ass hit a table.
Colt lowered to his knees and began to undo the straps of my high heels. “Dunno why you wear these things.” He eased one shoe from my foot before going to the next. “You’ll break your neck. I won’t always be here to save you, Freya.”
My heart swelled. “Yeah, you will. You’ll always be my hero.”
His eyes lifted and met mine. “You set me up, didn’t ya?”
Leaning forward, I swept a lock of thick, dark blond hair out of his ocean eyes. “You deserved it. How would you like it if I invaded your privacy? I don’t look at messages between you and your girlfriend.”
Slowly, he stood to his full height—the straps of my shoes swinging from his fingers—and dragged me into his arms. “That’s ‘cause I don’t gotta girlfriend.”
