“I miss you,” Lucy whined, oblivious to the fact Freya was listening in. “When are you coming home?”

My jaw tightened. When the fuck did she become so clingy? And how hadn’t I noticed?

“None of your business,” I retorted. “Told ya, you’re not my keeper. We’re not official, so my whereabouts will always be a mystery as far as you’re concerned. Been talkin’ to Prez, he said you turned up at the clubhouse lookin’ for me.”

Freya’s eyebrows hit her hairline. Even she knew it was a bad move.

Silence filled the room briefly before Lucy murmured, “I only wanted to know where you were. You never even said you were going away on club business. You should’ve told me; I’d have got my dad to look after the shop and come with you.”

A growl escaped my chest, and I snapped, “No, you wouldn’t. Told ya before, we don’t got that type of relationship. That’s why I’m callin’. Think it’s time we called it quits. We’re not goin’ anywhere, so there’s no point beatin’ a dead horse.”

Freya’s eyes rounded.

“What?” Lucy snapped.

I looked to the heavens, muttering obscenities. Lucy was about to start drama in three... two—

“Ten months,” she shrieked. “Ten fucking months I’ve wasted on you!”

Freya raised a hand to cover her laugh.

“Stop with the dramatics,” I muttered, lips twitching at Freya. “We’re not even official. You must’ve seen it comin’. If I was gonna wife you up, I’d have done it a month in. All that time with no commitment, babe. Says it all.”

“Oh my God,” she screamed. “You’re such an asshole. I can’t believe you’re dumping me over the phone. I got asked out on a date last night at the Lucky Shamrock. I turned him down. Foryou!” She sniffed haughtily.“I should’ve known you only wanted me for sex.”

I cocked my head. “Nah, babe. If I just wanted sex, I’d have picked a bitch who was good at it.”

Freya clapped a hand over her mouth.

“Excuse me?” Lucy said, tone deathly quiet.

“I’ve beenexcusingyour shitty blow jobs for ten months, babe,” I announced. “Too much teeth is a bitch.”

“Too much teeth?” Lucy whispered.

“Yeah. Too much teeth. Thought my poor Johnson was gettin’ mauled by a goddamned pit bull every time I went near your fuckin’ gnashers.”

Freya’s shoulders shook.

“Oh my God,” Lucy yelled. “You’re such an asshole!”

“Shame it took you ten months to work it out.” I studied Freya, thinking about what she’d just told me about Lucy’s bitchy behavior. “And I may be an asshole, but at least I’m not an evil, stuck-up bitch. Heard you’ve been a cunt to Freya behind my goddamned back. That shit don’t stand. The minute you opened your mouth to her, you showed me who you were. Now, I repeat, we’re done, it’s over, and in about eight seconds, I’ll be movin’ on. It’d be good if you did the same.”

“Should’ve knownshe’dbe involved,” Lucy snapped. “You won’t hear a word against her.” She scoffed. “I can’t believe she’s gone running to you telling lies when in reality, she’s the one who’s mean tome! You always take her side over mine.”

I emitted a growl. “Yeah, ‘cause I know Freya better than anyone. She hasn’t got a mean bone in her body. I trust her more than anyone in this world. She’s my best friend.”

Lucy sniffed.

“Lose my number,” I muttered, ending the call with a stab of my finger. I turned to Freya, face deadpan. “You happy now, Princess?”

She nodded.

My heart dropped when I noticed her glistening eyes. “So what’s with the tears?”

“I’m your best friend?” she asked disbelievingly.

My expression softened. “Yeah, Freya. You’re my everything. You’re the first thing I think of when I wake up, and you’re with me all day until I go to sleep. You’re the brightest light in the room, and sometimes it’s fuckin’ blindin’, but I can’t look away. Jesus, I don’t ever want to.”
