“Some genes express differently.” She rubbed her elbow. “I inherited more human genetics than werewolf. But it’s slowly clearing up as my shewolf strengthens.”
Another smile flashed between the mates that burned my heart with pity.
“Let me finish that for you.” Heather took out a knife from the front pocket of her apron. “Go and call her. The one you miss.”
I almost lost it at her perceptiveness. Her kindness.
Flesh damaged by the venom stung and ached. It wasn’t like I could call my mate and get her on the line. Strict protocol prevented us from contacting each other due to the danger of the Guardians tracking me. I didn’t know when I would see or hear from her again, if ever. Biame was cruel to me. Took away everything I loved. She might not survive the Guardians.
“I can’t,” I admitted. “I don’t have a phone or her number.”
Sarah moved to the sink and cleaned her hands. She dried them on her clothes and pulled something out of her pocket, setting it on the table. “Use mine. Dial Gable’s number. He can get anyone’s number.”
Gable. Luna’s fourth mate.
Body numb, I stared at the iPhone, unable to move to accept it. I hadn’t expected the offer of kindness. Or her trust.
“Thank you,” I rasped, moving to the sink and cleaning my hands. “You don’t know what this means.”
Heather smiled and her mate come up behind her to embrace her and kiss the top of her head. “Take as long as you want. I’ve got unlimited calls and texts.”
I went up to the small weak female and thumped my chest in my people’s way to show gratitude. “Thank you, little female. I owe you.”
She snorted and waved a dismissive hand at me. “Consider it a welcome gift.”
My chest rumbled with anticipation of speaking to my mate. I picked up my pace back to my cabin. The only thing I had to remember her by were her smell, her smile, those brilliant blue eyes, the ink on my arm of her, and the second goanna painting I did of her. Inside my cabin, I stared at the brown, yellow, red, and white dots on her portrait. My little mate. Heart of a wolf. Spirit of a goanna.
The pain under my breast became too great and I collapsed into the seat. New determination filled me like a wildfire decimating the forest to birth new life. I was going to find the evidence to clear my brother’s name and get them out. Luna and Blaze would work their magick to free my mate. Weweregoing to be a pack again, come hell or high water.
I activated Heather’s phone and searched for Gable’s number. Locating it, I hit dial, and bounced my knee, waiting for him to answer.
“Yeah?” Gable said, his voice alluring and hypnotic.
“Gable, it’s Raze,” I identified myself. “Can you get the number for Astra?”
“The infamous big guy.” I appreciated that he didn’t give me away on the phone and used Luna’s nickname.
“That’s me.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“You too.”
“Let me check with my sources and I’ll call you back in five.” Gable hung up before I got to repeat the word five.
Sure to his word, he called back five minutes and three seconds on the dot, and I answered, “How’d you go?”
Gable chuckled. “You’re in luck. I got the number of one of the guards at the prison. Ben. You know him?”
“Yeah. He’s one of the good guards,” I told Gable.
“Write this number down.” Gable recited it and I plugged it into Heather’s phone. “Good luck, man.”
“Thanks.” Gable dropped out before I landed another word. Short and sweet like me. My kinda guy. There was a lot to be said about a man who didn’t waste words or talk bullshit.
My fingers danced across the screen typing in the number. The phone rang and my heart picked up its pace. I held my breath, unsure whether I’d get through or not. Either way, I would get back to my mate whatever way I could.
