“Speaking of naked, what are you wearing.” His purr had my thoughts dive south.
Heat ignited at my core. “You know what I’m wearing.” I played along. “Blood red lacy bra and panties. You’re plucking the straps and stinging my skin the way you like to torment me.”
He let out a long groan of approval. “You’ve got a dirty mind. Here I was calling to check in with my mate. First thing you go dirty.”
“You started it. Besides, I’m using Ben’s phone so I gotta be quick.”
“You’ve got thirty minutes.”
“Thirty? How’d you wrangle that?”
“Hmm. Friends in high places.” I liked this game. “How’s your other mates?” Raze got to them quickly to get to the good stuff.
“Hanging in there.” I glanced outside and spat out a laugh at Knoxe kneeling in front of Tor’s wheelchair, pretending to give him a blow job, while Pascal yanked at Knoxe’s hair, and Ben crossed his arms and turned his back. A typical day for us, really. “They’re... ahh... getting busy in the corridor.”
Raze chuckled so warmly it exploded everywhere and popped out my crown. “Nothing’s changed then?”
I giggled. “No.”
“Are they treating you like a princess?”
Things hadn’t exactly been smooth with my men. Guilt, doubt, and depression cast shadows over our relationships and headspace.
“How are you?” I changed the topic and he growled with displeasure. I repeated the question to bring him back down from bossy to cuddly wolf.
“Making friends.” His voice sounded a little beat down with his hint of sarcasm and it made my heart contract.
Raze wasn’t a broody guy. Guarded and cautious. Dark and mysterious as heck. He always stayed centered and never let this place get to him... until Devon assaulted me, and my mate turned feral and ripped off the creep’s dick. For him to sound downcast meant he missed his pack and me.
“Luna’s been kind and generous in getting me a place with a commune of shifters and this burner phone.” He paused. “I could do with all the help I can get to track Devon and the box.”
That sounded like my girl Luna.
Ugh. Jaz’s box. Stolen. What didn’t Devon and his team know about in this place? The way they were always one-up on us suggested they had spies on us constantly and know every little secret. That darkened my thoughts and my heart crashed into my belly.
My gaze went to Ben, burning a hole in his back. Was he their mole? He’d been kind to my team and me. Trusted by the warden. Maybe too trusted. Cold exploded in my gut.
“Burner phone, huh?” I kept it light and fun to burn away the anguish in his voice that thumped in my heart. The cold, suspicious chill in my core. “You criminal you.”
His throat started to rumble the way it did when I was in his arms and I felt the ghost of his heat surrounding me. “Speaking of criminals, caught any yet?”
I shivered at his gruff timbre. “We’re close. They’re using a device to distort the veil so we can’t trace their movements. I’m working on finding out how.”
Raze sighed like he stretched back on his sofa. “My little nerdy wolf.”
“You love it.” I jabbed back.
“Found any leads on Jaz’s box?” My heart thud with anticipation that this nightmare was close to over.
His dragged out sigh turned the thud in my chest to a stutter. “I’m not sure yet. I’m trying to piece together clues that don’t relate.”
“You’re safe, though, right?” That set fear striking into my heart like a snake’s fangs.
Raze scratched his head and I heard the noise through the phone. “I’m either with the commune or Luna and her men.”
My muscles lost their growing tension. “What’s the commune like?”
“Friendly.”
