Allyson noted it in her calendar and put her phone away.
“Are we still on for tonight?” he asked.
“Yes.” She was driving out to Zeke’s again tonight, and they were going to finish up with the questionnaire and talk about their relationship. The idea sent shafts of excitement through her veins. Maybe there was a little bit of apprehension there, too, but mainly excitement. She wanted to try this with Zeke.
“Now doesn’t this look cozy,” a male voice commented.
Allyson took a deep breath as she looked up. “Hello, Rudy.” What the hell was he doing here?
“Rudy.” Zeke’s voice was hard.
Allyson shifted in her seat, and Zeke’s gaze shifted to her before going back to Rudy.
“We’re having a late lunch. Would you like to join us?”
Allyson’s gaze went from Rudy to Zeke. He had to be kidding, inviting Rudy to join them.
“No, thank you. I’m grabbing something to go.” Rudy’s gaze hardened. “Starr Construction isn’t happy with you, Allyson.”
“That’s their problem. Wes is aware of my report.” She wasn’t going to let Rudy bully her.
“We’ll see.” With that, he walked way.
“Why did you invite him to sit with us?” Allyson asked with a shudder.
“I might not like the man, but this way, he can’t say anything negative about us having lunch together.”
“Oh, I didn’t think about it like that.” Not that it mattered. Rudy would find a way to twist it and spread rumors, no matter what Zeke did. Her boss was aware that she was seeing Zeke. He did warn her if Rudy started making too big a fuss and others thought it was an issue, she might have to let Rudy take over all of Zeke’s jobs, and she would work with Starr.
Megan walked up with their food and drinks, placed them on the table, and then bustled away. “Thank goodness, I’m hungry.” Allyson picked up her Panini and took a big bite.
“Did you miss breakfast?”
“Power bar on the run.” Thanks to Starr Construction. Their guy had been a half-hour late meeting her, and then she’d had to write up the lengthy report. And, of course, there was Rudy.
“We need to talk about your eating habits.”
Her eyebrows rose. “What?”
“Yes, but not now. Eat up because you need the protein and carbs.”
“Are you saying I’m too skinny?” That was a first.
“No. You are perfect.” He grinned and leaned forward. “Perfect enough to take a bite out of.”
Heat filled her face. “Zeke.” Her voice was soft.
“Eat, sweetheart. Tonight, we finish up our talk and make a plan.”
“Looking forward to it.” She gave him what she hoped was a sassy grin before going back to her food.
Chapter 7
“Your questionnaire is all filled out,” Zeke said later that night, after they had a dinner of Asian food at his house.
“I finished it up. And before you ask, Dani helped me when I had some questions.”
“Good.” He flipped through the pages a second time. “We’re compatible with kink, but I do have some questions for you.”
