Her phone beeped. “Damn, I need to go. I’m supposed to meet with the Starr Construction guys.”
“Be careful.” He held open the truck door for her.
“I will be.” Allyson climbed in.
Zeke shut the door. “Call me if you need anything or get lost.”
Allyson shook her head.
* * * *
Zeke stepped out of the way and watched her back out and drive off. He hated the idea she was getting more Starr jobs. Something odd was going on there.
Zeke rubbed his forehead as he walked back inside the club. Max wanted to talk after Allyson left. He found Max in his office. “What did you need?”
“I wanted to know if you’d be available to cover the club all shift Friday and Saturday this weekend?” Max asked.
“Let me look.” Zeke pulled up his calendar. “I don’t see any reason why not.”
“Good. You and Colby will be in charge, with Noah and Oliver as backups.”
“What’s happening, Max?” It wasn’t like Max to take a weekend off. No matter how much everyone tried to lighten his load.
“I promised Sierra a weekend away. I want to make sure there’s coverage.”
“That makes sense.”
“I like Allyson,” Max said.
“She’s fun.” Zeke didn’t know what else to say.
“If she wants to join, all she’ll need to do is fill out the background check. I’ll waive the classes since I know you’ve been teaching her.”
“Yeah.” It wasn’t like he hadn’t talked about Allyson. He had. “I’ll bring it up to her again.”
“All right. If you can stop by Thursday night, I’ll have an extra set of keys for you then, and a couple of gate codes you can use for the construction crews coming in.”
“You’re setting up special codes?”
“Yes. I know all your guys are signing NDAs but the delivery drivers are not, and I want to make sure I know who is using the codes. Plus, they’ll only be active during certain hours.”
“Got it.” Zeke left. Time to get back to his job. He was going to miss seeing Allyson tonight, but it would give him time to plan out Sunday’s playtime.
Chapter 8
Zeke looked over his handywork early Sunday afternoon. He’d cut short breakfast with his family to get home and prepare for Allyson. He should be tired after pulling full shifts at the club on Friday and Saturday, but he wasn’t.
Maybe because he was seeing Allyson. It was the only day they could play. They’d been talking about her joining him at the club, and she wanted to try. So he’d asked Max about giving her the background check to fill out.
They’d do that first thing. It was a beautiful day; too bad they couldn’t play outside, but with what he wanted to do, it was better to be inside. Zeke had never played much outside the club, so this was new to him.
He’d rearranged the family room, put an air mattress on the floor, along with several mats. He had his toys and ropes set out on the table. They were covered so he wouldn’t scare Allyson. Although she didn’t seem the type to scare easily.
A knock on the door and he glanced at the clock. One, right on time. He opened the door to see Allyson. She had on a flowery sundress and sandals.
“Hi,” she said.
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. They were both breathless when he lifted his head.
