“Oh. Probably apartment two. They’ve been at it a lot lately.” She didn’t even seem fazed by his words. He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not, but he needed to trust her. Kaley opened her door and climbed out.
Anthony took her elbow, and they went in together. He pushed the building door shut, not that it locked. He hadn’t been able to find any information on the building owner or management. He needed to know Kaley was safe. At her apartment, she opened the door and waited until he made sure everything was okay.
She stepped inside, and he closed the door, throwing the main dead bolt. “I don’t like leaving you here alone.”
“It’s fine.” She hung her purse in the small closet next to the door after she took her cell phone out.
He shook his head. “It’s not fine. How violent do they get?” Even though Kaley was down the hall, he could still hear the couple screaming at each other.
“They just yell at each other.”
The sound of crashing glass echoed down the hall.
“Occasionally throw things.”
Anthony shook his head. He needed to do something. “Would you consider packing a bag and coming back to the house to stay the night?”
Kaley gave him a shy smile as she shook her head. “I’ll be fine.”
“Where’s your van?”
“In a locked garage behind the building.”
“Well, at least that’s something.” Kaley crossed over to him and put her hand on his arm.
“Honestly, Anthony. I’ll be fine. This happens all the time. I’m used to it.”
“Just because you’re used to it doesn’t mean it’s safe.”
“Agreed. Go back and take care of Clara.” She unlocked and opened her front door.
“I don’t like it.”
She shook her head. “If something happens that worries me, I’ll call you.”
“Call the police first, then me. Promise.”
“I promise.”
It was the best he was going to get from her at this point. Leaning down, he brushed a kiss over her lips. “We’ll talk tomorrow. Early.” He shut the door behind him and waited until he heard the dead bolts lock. At least she had more than one.
Once back in his SUV, Anthony sat there. He couldn’t make himself leave even though he needed to get back home. He pulled his cell out and called Logan, a police officer he knew from the club.
“Hey, Anthony, what’s up?”
“Are you on duty tonight?”
“I am. Is something going on at your grandmother’s house?”
“No. It’s the apartment building where Kaley lives.” Anthony quickly outlined the situation.
“I see. I’ll send a car around. There’s really not much they can do.”
“Just knowing they’ll be around to check things out makes me feel better. Now if I could find out who owns this building.”
“You might check with Allison, Zeke’s girlfriend. She works at the city planning office.”
“Great idea. Thanks, Logan. Are you going to make it to the club Saturday night?” Logan’s hours weren’t always great for him to attend.
