“He does?” When did he find time for that? Probably while she was working.

“Yes, before I did the demo with him, Anthony insisted on chatting with Gabriel and me about it. Max is careful about what he allows in the club, and one of the prohibitions is no blood.”

Kaley nodded. While the information helped her, it didn’t make her fear diminish. “Thank you, Dani. This has helped.”

“If knife play is a hard limit, Anthony won’t violate it.”

“I know he won’t.” That was one thing she was sure of. The question now was could she watch him doing knife play in the club? And could he feel the same way about her that she felt about him if she could never take this step with him?

Chapter Twenty

Anthony was frustrated and maybe a little bit angry. Kaley had been behind the bar all night. It was now after midnight. He’d been sitting at the bar off and on, but she’d kept busy and only stopped to ask what he wanted to drink and to refill his sparkling water.

She was ignoring him, and he didn’t like it not one bit. She hadn’t even let him drive her tonight, insisting she’d get a ride. He found out that Noah had driven her. Jealousy reared its ugly head for a moment before he realized Noah had given several of the subs a ride that night.

He kept his gaze on Kaley as Max walked up to her and pulled her aside. He could see Max wasn’t happy. Anthony was about to go over to the pair when Kaley nodded, and Evan took her by the arm.

Oh, hell, no. Anthony was on his feet crossing over to the pair before Max stepped in front of him.

“Excuse me, Max.”

“No.” Max put his hands on Anthony’s shoulders. “You need to let her be.”

“It isn’t like you to interfere,” Anthony said, his gaze on Kaley and Evan.

“I normally wouldn’t, but Kaley asked me to find her a ride home tonight. Evan is leaving early and giving her a ride.”

“I can take her home.” He drew his hand through his hair.

“I know you can, but when I suggested it— Let’s just say Kaley vetoed the idea.”

“What the hell?” Anthony shook his head.

“Did you two have an argument?”

“Not that I’m aware of. She’s been acting squirrely since my demo.” No matter what he did, Kaley was a step ahead of him. Why wouldn’t she talk to him?

“Have you talked with her?”

“I’ve tried.” Anthony took a step back. “I’ve called her, left messages, I don’t know what’s going on.”

Max stared at him. “Give her some time.”

“How much time, Max? She’s shutting me out.”

“I can’t answer that. Did you do anything that might have set her off?”

“I know you’re trying to be helpful, but we’ve only done light play outside the club. I tried to talk to her after the demo, but she didn’t want to talk about it.”

“What happened at the demo?”

“She left after the first couple of minutes. I couldn’t stop the demo to go after her.”

“Of course not, but you said you tried to talk to her.”

“I did. She cuddled in my lap, but refused to talk about what was happening.”

“Who was she sitting with?”
