I turn to look at Jen, still munching on that muffin. “Yeah?”

She shakes her head, a smile tipping her lips. “You’re not wearing that.”

“What?” I peek down at my newest purchase. “My apron? What’s wrong with it?” I examine it again and can’t help but laugh. “Would you fuck me? I’d fuck me. I’d fuck me so hard.” I mumble in a creepy voice as I pretend to put on lipstick.

“Stop it. That’s so creepy. You’re a freak.”

“You don’t like this apron?” I wave my hand over the hairy, male torso covering the front of my apron. “Yeah, this may be too much, huh?”

“Just a little,” Jen replies, and our laughter is cut short by a knock on the door.

“Somebody must really need some coffee.”

I head toward the front door of the bakery and stop in my tracks. Atticus stands on the other side holding a bouquet of roses.

A smile pulls at my lips while I unlock the door. “What are you doing here?”

He extends his arm, and the smell of the gorgeous bouquet hits my nose—the light pinks of the peony complement the vibrant pink of the roses.

“These are beautiful.” I take the flowers from him and bring the bouquet to my nose to sniff. “Thank you so much, but you shouldn’t have.” I scoot to the side to allow him to pass. “Please come in.”

“It’s the least I could do for causing your temporary blindness. You sure you don’t want to get dressed first?”

What? Is this my dream becoming a reality? Did I finally go out in public without pants?

I jerk my head down to examine my clothes.Shit.I’m still wearing the hairy man torso apron.I swear I cannot just be cool around this guy.

Gliding my hand down the length of my body, I showcase the cringe-worthy moment that is this apron. “I like to let it all hang out. It makes me feel free.”

Smooth move, Evelyn.I’m a moron.

It was funny when I put it on to mess with Jen. Not so much when my crush shows up in lingerie, or the male equivalent, also known as gray sweat pants.

“I can tell.” He chuckles before stopping to place a kiss on my cheek. He’s so lovely. He smells good. “I wanted to come by to make sure that you’re okay. How are you feeling? How’s your eye?”

“I’m fine.” I wave off his concern. “It’s all good. I need to set up my follow-up appointment today, but I’ll be good as new in a few days, I’m sure.”

“Let me take you. You probably shouldn’t be driving.”

“Nonsense. I’m good but thank you for offering. Can I get you some coffee? A muffin?”

How about my muffin?

I bite back the words and smother a laugh while I make my way over to the counter. Atticus’s footsteps shuffle behind me. I dig under the counter and grab a vase while he takes a seat on a stool.

“No, I’m on my way to practice. I just wanted to stop by, see if you were here, and check on you.”

Marry me.

I try to hide how excited I am that he came to check on me. It’s hard, real hard to not hop over this counter and onto his lap, rub myself all over him, and carry on with our plans before I got my eye shot out. But before I can put thought into action, the bell over the door chimes.

Shit. I forgot to lock it again. We aren’t open for another hour. I hate turning customers away.

“Good morning.”

I turn toward the door and the familiar voice to find Maddox Case in all his hotness. Jen should totally bang him. I don’t know why she hasn’t already. Yeah, he’s a little bit of a manwhore, but looking like he does, I can’t blame him.

“Chiquita, what the fuck happened to your eye?” He makes his way behind the counter to me, and his large, tattooed hands grip my face to turn my head from side to side, inspecting me from every angle.
