“Why are you out of breath, anyway?” she questioned. I heard her breath hitch. “Oh my God, you’re not.”

“No, I um… I ran to my desk from the washroom. I was expecting a call from a client.”

“Uh-huh,” she said.

“Look, I’ll be there shortly.”

“Hurry,” Carly sang.

I put the receiver down on the cradle and turned to look at Spencer, who stood there with a smug look on his face.

“What?” he said, licking my arousal off his fingers.

“Nothing,” I said, feeling completely frustrated again.

“Hey, I told you not to answer that.” He chuckled.

“Well, I wasn’t supposed to forget lunch. You distracted me again.”

“Is that so?” Spencer said, coming over to me, running his hands over my bare arms. “Give me another five and I’ll do it all over again,” he whispered, biting my ear.

“No deal. I’ve got to go.” I giggled then climbed up on my toes and pressed a kiss to his lips. “I’ll see you at home?”

“Sorry I’m late!” I cried as I rushed over to the table where Carly sat.

“Jesus, it’s about time. It’s not like we have tomorrow, you know.” Carly laughed.

Carly was headed to Denver. She’d been hired at a school there and was starting in two weeks. I’d gone with her to find a place and to help get her settled, and tomorrow she started on her new adventure.

“So, did you call Max and tell him you’d be in town starting tomorrow? I mean, he said to call once you got there,” I questioned.

When Carly and I had gone to Denver, Spencer had arranged for us to stay at Max’s apartment. Max had been more thanwelcoming, taking the day off to show us around the city, and then he’d told Carly that there was no reason they couldn’t hang out together until she got settled and met some people. I knew he was probably only doing it because Spencer had told him to; nevertheless, I thought it was nice.

“Yeah, we’ve been messaging back and forth. He said he’d meet me at the airport if I wanted.”

“Awesome.”

We took a couple of minutes to order, and then I slid the bag I was carrying into my purse.

“What’s that?” Carly questioned, looking at the rolled-up bag.

I had told no one, not even Spencer, but the last few mornings I’d woken up I’d not been feeling so hot. This morning had been the worst, and I’d thrown up right after Spencer left for work.

“It’s nothing,” I muttered.

Carly gave the same look she always gave when she knew I was hiding something. “Ainsley?”

I let out a breath. I’d been dying to tell someone. “Okay fine,” I said, looking around the restaurant as if I were guarding a state secret. “Say nothing, but I bought a pregnancy test.”

Carly’s eyes lit up. “Oh goodness, really. You think you’re pregnant?”

“Shhhh…” I said, bringing my forefinger to my lips. “Yes.”

“Oh God, I hope so,” she said, rubbing her hands together in excitement. “You better tell me what the answer is as soon as you know.”

Spencer, Nikki, and I had just returned home after driving Carly to the airport. It was late, and Nikki was sound asleep in the back seat. Spencer carried her in, and we put her to bed.

“What do you say we take a bottle of wine and hit the hot tub?”
