One

If someone had told her that she’d ever have a happy life, she would have laughed in their faces. The one thing she'd learned while she was growing up was that life was a drudge. Things happened and they weren't good. The best she could do was to work and work and work to keep her head above water. If she didn’t, she'd drown in the stagnant waters of everyday drudge.

What she didn't expect was a sudden ring of her apartment doorbell.
