“I could just get out of the car if you’re that upset about it?”

But I can’t kiss you if you’re not in the car.

“You want me to pull over?” he called her bluff.

“Hell no!” She blushed. “But only ‘cause I don’t want to listen to Chelsea’s music in their car.”

“Is that the only reason?”

She chewed her lip and shook her head.

Ah. Busted, pretty girl. ‘Tell’ number one. Chews her lip when nervous. Kinda cute.

AJ’s inexplicably crappy post-game mood had practically disappeared upon Lisa’s arrival. As they drove, he felt himself relaxing, though he was anxious about being out in public with her, again, and was quickly regretting suggesting they go out in public for dinner, together.

Idiot. Shoulda just taken her back to her hotel for food and...

As they entered the bar, AJ noticed Lisa looked tired. He leaned towards her and whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry, babe. If things get too much, just say you’re jetlagged and I’ll take you back to your hotel.”

Way to go, calling her ‘babe’ in public is the exact way to go about making people think she’s your cousin. Fight every instinct you have. That’s all you have to do.

I can totally do that. Not.

She smiled appreciatively as he brushed his fingers against hers.

Damnit, AJ. This woman is gonna get you in trouble.

Their eyes met again.

Look away!he told himself. When she looked at him, he felt like all of his defenses were lowered at once.

What is with this chick?

A voice disturbed his thoughts.

“OHMIGOSH it’s LISA!”

“Hey you!” Lisa answered warmly. “It’s been too long.” They hugged. “Have you seen Chelsea?”

I don’t know who that is, how do you know who that is? Do you just know people everywhere you go? Can’t say I’d be overly surprised…

“Yeah, she’s over there,” she gestured. “I’ll join you in a few, I’ve just gotta talk to somebody first.”

Stealing a glance at AJ, Lisa led the way to the table, where drinks were waiting and some of the team were already sitting, chatting. They got settled at the table and Lisa sipped her Diet Coke, checking the time on her phone.

It’s only nine forty-five but she must be so tired after that long flight. Maybe I shouldn’t have encouraged her to stay out late.

He could feel her staring at him and glanced in her direction. Her cheeks colored as she looked away and answered something Chelsea had asked. He liked that Lisa was so easy to read. She seemed to be enjoying herself, despite having her accent mocked repeatedly by just about everyone at the table.

She seems to be taking their ribbing in good humor at least. Just as well, as these guys can be relentless. She’s been quiet for a few minutes though; I wonder what she’s thinking.

“You ok?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.

Regretting flying halfway across the world?

“Hmm? Oh. Uh. Yeah, I guess I’m just tired,” she answered, avoiding his anxious stare.

Is that really all it is? You’re going to drive yourself crazy second-guessing every little glance and movement, AJ.
