He smiled as she slept on his chest, staying awake for a while with the day’s events running through his head. He was in awe of how fiercely she was ready to protect him against Dwight, how angry she’d been when he appeared in the doorway of his hospital room and how loving she’d been when she came back.

Mental note, thank Jer for bringing her back minus her desire to kill a hockey player.

As he lay listening to her breathe in his arms, she startled occasionally.

She’s so scared,he pulled her closer to his chest and kissed her hair.I’m not going anywhere, Lis. It’s all ok.

Chapter 27

AJ was already awake when Jeremy burst into the room, but his eyes were still closed.

“Good morning, people!” he announced loudly. “Oh shit!”

AJ groggily opened his eyes, saw Jeremy grin and the door close again.

It’s almost like he plans this.

AJ grinned.

She’s going to lose her shit.

He felt her turn to look for her clothes and he tried to keep a straight face. She shrieked, rolled over and fell onto the floor. He heard a thud as she attempted to get back up.

“Ow! Motherfucker!”

The laughter on the other side of the door continued as he propped himself up on his elbow, unable to contain his amusement.

“You two ok in there?” his mom asked.

I feel much better, thanks, mom. I got laid last night. You should probably feel somewhat ashamed of yourself AJ Williams.

But I don’t.

“Uh. Yeah, we’re fine. I just hit my head.”

More nervous laughter from Lisa as she scrambled to wrap a sheet around herself.

“On what?” Jeremy.

Don’t poke the not-a-morning-person-bear, Jer.

AJ couldn’t help but giggle at Lisa’s distress.

“The bed frame?” Her face looked as hot as coals. She ran a quick hand through her hair.

That’s definitely sex-hair. And it’s hot as hell. It makes me want to –

“Why were you under the bed in the first place?” Brad called, innocently.

Yay! Brad’s here. Now he can get off my case about never getting laid.

Opening the door, she stepped back to let them in, avoiding their accusing gazes and knowing smiles.

“Because I wasnaked, Brad. Ok? A girl’s gotta cover her bits when her boyfriend’s mother shows up and hospital doors have no locks. Also, because I couldn’t find my freakin’ clothes and thought I’d be kind and not scare the crap out of you by opening the door without my sheet!”

Nice try on the confident smile there, Lis. But I call BS. You’re absolutely mortified. And you have no idea where I hid your clothes. You’ll never find them – give up!

“Well, ok then. I don’t think we need any more detail on that topic.” Cindy swiftly put the lid on the conversation.
