“Wow. Thanks. Lie to me, man. Can’t you just tell me what I want to hear, for once?”
“Nope. Then you’d expect it all the time and I can’t do that. Home?”
“Please. I’m absolutely exhausted. I’m probably going to sleep ‘til she gets home.”
“And beyond. You didn’t rest well in hospital, and you still have healing to do – or so said Nurse O’Hottie, anyway.”
“Uh-huh. And just how many nurses’ numbers did you leave the hospital with?”
“Three. But they all said the same thing. Rest and heal.”
“And you’d justhaveto call them to tattle on me if I don’t do what I am supposed to?”
“Ha! No. I’m calling them either way. But I still think you should rest.”
“Yes, mom.”
Chapter 29
When they got to AJ’s, Jeremy sent him to bed and hit the kitchen. He’d told AJ on the way home that he was going to prep some meals for him to have over the coming days. AJ was both excited and relieved – Jeremy was a fantastic cook and AJ loved his food. And he also wasn’t sure he’d have the energy to cook for himself. AJ couldn’t settle, he tossed and turned and wound up just taking a quick nap. When he woke up, he was thirsty and found Jeremy flicking through TV channels as he went to get a drink.
“You’re still here.”
“I am. Very observant. Get used to it. You’re not asleep.”
“Now who’s observant? I can’t settle and I’m thirsty. You’re staying?”
“For a few days at least.”
“Is this her doing?”
“I’d say no, but I’d be lying. We agreed that it could be helpful for me to stay close by when Lisa had to leave.”
“I appreciate it, thanks, man. Though hopefully it’s just a precaution and I’m on the mend, at last.”
He left Jeremy to his channel surfing and walked into the kitchen. The smells that met him as he walked towards the fridge, were incredible. His mouth watered and his stomach growled.
Holy shit, look at all this food. And here I was thinking I didn’t get a wink of sleep.
The worktops were lined with food, a huge lasagna, a couple of casseroles, some side dishes, including bacon mac and cheese and a plate of foil-wrapped cylinders.
“Dude?” AJ called out to the living room, “Are these breakfast burritos?”
It’s Jeremy, The Breakfast King. I think it’s a safe enough bet.
“Do you even know me at all?” came the answer.
AJ smirked and rolled his eyes as he peeled back some of the foil wrapper and took a bite of the burrito.
It’s still warm! And it tastes like heaven!
“Was this her idea too?” he asked, indicating his burrito as he got back to the sofa and sat down.
“Again, I like to think of it as a team effort. She made some comfort food suggestions, yes.”
“Not like you to split the credit for something you did by yourself, Jer.”
“Can’t have you thinking I’m a good guy who just wanted to do something nice for his friend, or something.”
