I walk toward the hospital room, my chest tight and my steps unsteady. But this time, it’s not out of fear of losing control.

It’s because, for the first time, I’m ready to let go of it.

To let her decide.

To trust her.

And maybe… just maybe… that’s how I finally win.

Chapter Thirty -Three

Lawliss

My eyes flutter open, and I find everyone hovering around me. The last thing I remember is feeling so weak while running toward Eddie. Eddie.

Where is he?

I scan the room, searching for him, and then I see him—leaning against the wall, far away.

My heart aches.

He’s right there, but he’s keeping his distance. Trying so hard to give me space.

“What happened to you?” My voice is hoarse, but the question comes out firm.

Everyone follows my gaze, turning toward him. Eddie’s posture stiffens, like he wasn’t expecting me to look for him.

I stretch my hand toward him, and in a second, he’s beside me. Up close, he looks wrecked, tired and ragged, with his eyes dark with exhaustion. But there’s something else, something in his aura that I can’t quite place.

“What’s wrong with you?” I ask again.

“I’m fine,” he says, his voice rough. “As long as you are.”

A lump forms in my throat.

The baby.

I need to tell him.

“The baby,” I whisper.

“She’s fine,” he says immediately.

She? My brow lifts.

“Or he,” he adds quickly.

I blink. I never told him but he knows. How?

“I…” I start, guilt tightening my chest.

He shakes his head. “It’s fine. I understand. You had a lot going on, and you couldn’t tell me.” His voice is soft, resigned. “It’s all my fault.”

“Eddie…”

“Let me finish,” he says, gripping my hand tightly, like he’s afraid I’ll slip away.

“I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember,” he says, his voice thick with emotion. “I was wrong to claim you as my wife without asking you. And I was wrong to propose to you knowing you were already my wife. In my defense, I hoped you’d never find out. I wanted to erase it to protect you from the pain. But that was selfish. That was wrong.”
