I wrap my arms around her. “I’m fine. Your stomach grumbled, so I’m guessing you’re hungry. I didn’t bring my phone in here, so if we want to order food, we’ll have to get out.”

She nods and lets out a breath before using the edge of the tub to push herself up and grabbing a towel to wrap around herself. I do the same and pull the plug.

I unlock my phone and hand it to her. “Why don’t you order us something while I go and grab those clothes out of my car.”

She nods, and I kiss her nose before heading to the car.

CHAPTER 29

Zoey

Icross my legs as I sit on the edge of the bed and order us some comfort food. I don’t want anything too fancy right now, and quite frankly I’m still waking up from that extremely relaxing nap I had in the tub with Matt. I can’t believe he let me fall asleep and stayed in there with me. By the time he finally woke me up, the water was freezing and my hands and feet were pruney beyond belief.

I let the app auto pick the address based on GPS and hope it’s right. Just as I’m about to lock the phone and put it aside, a text comes through.

Hazel - Raincity Pub

How’s my baby boy doing?

I stare at the message, not sure what the hell I’m supposed to do. I know I’m not supposed to respond, but every part of me wants to delete the message and pretend it never came through. The last thing I want is this woman to come back to town and try to take Jayden away from Matt, or even try to take Matt from me. She’s the mother of his son. I know Matt was never in an actual relationship with her because he’s never done the monogamous thing before, but would he try because she’s the mother of his son?

I hear Matt jog up the stairs, and when he stops at the end of the bed and sees me, his grin drops.

“What’s wrong?”

I clutch his phone tight in my hands. “Please don’t be mad.”

He drops the bag on the end of the bed and climbs on beside me. “Bug, what’s up?”

I take a deep breath. I’ve never been one to back down, and I’m not going to now. Even if the answer hurts me. “When I finished ordering food, a text came through. It was Hazel asking how her baby boy was doing, and assuming you aren’t into that kink”—I force a laugh—“I assume she means Jayden, and I wanted to delete the message. I didn’t, it’s still there, but I got angry and insecure and wanted you to not see it.” I turn and face him more fully. “I don’t want her to take Jayden from you, and I don’t want her to take you from me. I only just got you, and you just got your son, and you love him so much, and you’re such a good dad.”

Matt’s grinning at me like a fool while I’m over here having a mini freakout in nothing but a towel on his brand-new bed.

I give his arm a shove. “Why are you grinning at me like that?”

“Only just got me?”

I scoff. “That’s what you pulled from that?”

He shrugs. “Right now, that’s the only important thing I caught.”

“What about her trying to take Jayden from you?”

He tucks a piece of hair behind my ear and strokes my cheek. “Bug, when she first dropped Jayden off, I made sure I got certified copies of her signing her rights away. The courts don’t typically terminate parental rights in Canada, but I made sure there’s a copy with a lawyer, with my parents, with Josh and Liv, with Caleb, with Grayson, and I have one. The original is in a safe deposit box. I wasn’t risking her trying to take him away. I will fight her tooth and nail if she tries anything. But I love that you’re so worried about that. I love that you care so much about Jayden.”

“I love him,” I whisper, and he kisses me softly.

“I know. And you’re not losing me either.”

I look up at him through my lashes.

“Zoey, you have me completely.”

I hug him, and we fall back onto the bed. My stomach makes noise again.

Matt laughs. “My girl is hungry.”

“Food’s on the way.”
