Zazu
Mine.
Vibrations travel up my legs as the metal monster shudders under my feet. I lean against the bars, straining toward the front. If I barely breathe, I can occasionally catch snippets of her voice coming through the barrier between us.
All Mine.
That’s what went through my head the instant she walked toward that bitter-smelling cell. Every hum of her voice through the metal barrier sends the same thought quivering down my spine.
It’s like she’s pushed one of those brushes the guards use on the floor through my mind. Everything I questioned makes sense. There exists another part of me in the world that I never knew about before today. Until this female walked in. She is pack.
This is why I was so desperate to escape into the Other, because some voice within knew she existed.
Now I know, and nothing will ever be the same again. This is how the superior alpha felt when his mate entered the old territory.
When Mine rested her hand on that other alpha, I lunged forward. I wanted to tear his arm clear from his body for daring to receive her touch. The bars held me—this time.
The metal beast lurches, throwing me against the cold metal. The upright lengths are thinner in this cell than the last place. I barely have enough room to sit down in here; my knees grind against the cage and the vibrations sting my tailbone. But it doesn’t matter. Nothing matters anymore except being close to Mine.
I sway, lost in a daze without end, until the monster shudders to a stop. The rumbling noise chokes off and I strain. My mouth rustles from dryness and my bladder burns, but I dare not do anything that might displease her.
Cocking my head, I trace the sound of her steps outside, swinging about to face the doors as they creak open.
I growl as anotherhelps her up the step, and then I forget anything else exists as Mine fills the space. Fake lighting glows in the darkness behind her. Or maybe it comes from her.
“Hello, Zazu,” she murmurs, coming close.
Heat runs through my stomach and a noise I didn’t know I could make vibrates in my throat. All the fighting to protect my territory led to this moment. I was training for her.
She chuckles, the sound soothing my soul. “Oh, yes, you know who’s your omega, don’t you? Same way I know you’re my alpha. I’m sorry about the rough ride but hang on a little longer and it will be over.” Her slim hands wrap around the bar. “One more day and you won’t have to be alone ever again.”
I stare at that smooth skin, so different from my own scarred body. Moving as slow as possible so I don’t startle her, I sink down so I can view that delicate hand from up close. Instinct tells me I need to treat it more gently than anything else in life. But I only know violence. Can I even touch Mine without hurting her?
Ever so softly, I rest my forehead against her knuckles.
A shiver runs through the slim lengths. “Oh, shit!”
I jerk back in case that breathless tone means I hurt her, but no fear darkens her beautiful scent. I lift my nose, questing through the sweet air as I search for answers in her body language. Those delicate fingers open, reaching for me. Huffing out a sigh of relief, I brush my face up and down against her smooth skin. I’ve never felt such a gentle touch in my life. Never knew it was possible.
Mine whimpers. “You’re so beautiful.” Her fingers graze my cheek, and she strokes hair out of my eyes.
I melt.
“You’re purring.” Water leaks from her eyes.
I want to lick it away, but I can’t reach. Instead, I turn my cheek slowly and suck her fingers into my mouth. Her hand trembles and the most delicious noise falls from her open lips. She likes it.
I suck a little more and run my tongue between her finger joints.
She moans. “Zazu!”
I tilt my head a little. It’s hard to see in the shadows, but she’s not pulling away. Her scent blows sweeter than ever. I’m making her happy.
“Okay, big boy, any more of that and I’ll end up coming.” Mine withdraws her hand, her body spasming faintly with each breath.
A blistering sensation, new and powerful, rushes through me. She’s too far away. What if she leaves and I never see her again? I need what’s mine. A growl pulsates in my chest. I won’t stand for this distance between us.
She backs up a step, glancing toward the doors.
