After laughing again, she said, "Of course, love. I'll have someone bring that to you right away."
The nurse finished up and even helped me with a quick trip to the bathroom, a tiny little room in the corner that I hadn't even noticed.
"All right, dear," she said. "The doctor will be by for her rounds later today. And you'll be out of here after that, I imagine."
"Really?"
"I'm thinking so. But I'll be back for that picture."
"Um, okay. Thanks so much."
She nodded and wheeled her cart toward the door. "I'll send in your entourage now." And she laughed as she left the room.
Confusion swirled around in my mind.
When Tyler, Ben, and my mom came back in, I took turns staring at all of them. "Okay. You need to tell me what on earth is going on. Please tell me why the nurse would want a photo with me."
Ben chuckled. "She did?"
"Yep. And I'd really appreciate some answers. Now."
"You're sounding a wee bit cranky there, Kit Kat. Is anyone bringing you food?"
I glared at Ben. Yeah, I was definitely starting to feel cranky between the lack of food and answers.
But my mom finally spoke up. "Well, hon, I don't even know where to start. There's so much to tell you. So much has happened."
"Why don't you start by telling me where I am? Like what city? What country even?"
"That's an easy one. We're in Inverness, Scotland."
Wow. I had no clue we'd traveled that far in the helicopter. I looked at Tyler, wondering how long the trip had been and how many minutes he'd had to endure, but his expression was unreadable.
"Okay. And why aren't the police here right now?"
The food arrived, squelching our conversation while the man brought in a big tray and arranged everything so I didn't have to leave my bed. Once I thanked him, I started devouring the food, jello first, groaning at the delicious taste.
After I swallowed, I tried again, "Will you explain while I'm eating? Please?"
"Of course," my mom answered. "So, hon, I'm sure you have no idea about this. But do you remember when you called me and left a message?"
I paused between bites. "Yeah. Of course."
"You forgot to hang up."
Chapter Twenty-Three
What was she talking about? "So?"
My mom looked at Tyler and Ben. "I didn't think she did it on purpose. It's just amazing. Really. If you think about it."
"Think about what?" I asked. "What? What? What?" I was seriously dying to know!
"When you left me that message, you forgot to hang up, and well, you actually recorded Malcolm's confession."
I almost choked on the jello. "I did?"
My mom's face lit up. "You did. You really did. He admitted he set you up. Do you even remember that?"
