"What? Really?" I felt like I'd just found a little piece of home here in this strange city.
"Come on, Sky. Our ride's here," Kara said, her friend gone. "Normally, I'd walk but not in these heels."
"Wait," Bear said. He grabbed me to him and planted a kiss right on my lips, making me gasp with surprise. "I'll call you soon."
I nodded and tried to get into the car somewhat gracefully without flashing Bear my underwear.
Hey, that rhymed.

A short time later, Kara and I wolfed down some cold pizza in our room, and her phone buzzed.
She frowned after reading it.
"What's up?" I asked, my mouth full.
"My stupid brother asking if I made it home okay."
Aw, that was actually kind of sweet, I thought to myself but didn't say it since she seemed so annoyed.
"His sly way of checking up on me," she added, biting into a huge slice.
Oh, I guess thatwaspretty sly, and I had totally fallen for it. She didn't respond to his text, and her phone buzzed again.
"Now he wants to know if webothmade it home okay," she said, wearing a confused look.
She typed furiously and muttered, "We both made it home. Okay, dingleberry? Stop texting me, and go watchThe Crownwith your stupid girlfriend."
Laughing, I finished my pizza and collapsed on my bed, not even bothering to brush my teeth or take off my makeup, something I always regretted in the morning.
"Hey, Sky, before you pass out, I had a great night with you."
"Me too," I said, turning to face her way.
"And thanks for being my pinkie pact pal."
"Thankyou," I said. "And guess what?"
"What?"
"We did it, bitch."
"Fuck, yeah. We did it," she agreed.
And even though it was dark, I could practically see the brightness of her smile.

Sunday was a super lazy day where we slept late and visited the packed bookstore. Why did textbooks have to be so damn expensive? Some of my classes, it was okay to use the digital version. But for others, they wanted the real deal.
As Kara and I walked back to our dorm, I wondered about a job. Although I'd worked full-time for a solid year, I had paid rent to my parents, and I knew I would need some money to live in this expensive city.
"Hey, I'd love your advice," I said to Kara after we crossed the street. "I kind of need a j-o-b."
"You need a job?" she asked, a bit surprised.
