"Well, she wasn't a senator when we were little, just the last eight years," Kieran answered. "Before that, she was in the House."
"Ah, well, still. That must have been pretty amazing. Did you get to meet any famous people? Presidents?"
They both laughed.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"Presidents, kings, queens, princesses, princes, rock stars, athletes, movie stars," Kara listed off.
I felt my jaw drop and almost hit the marble floor. "Are you kidding me?"
"Kind of a neat perk, right?" Kieran said, his eyes amused.
"Just a little," I agreed.
"We've even stayed in the White House overnight. My mom says it's the least she can do for not being around so much," Kieran said, his voice a little low.
And that right there told me so much.
"We always had a nanny, though," Kara said, like she was trying to look on the bright side. "Because Dad... well, Dad..."
"He was super busy with work too," Kieran finished.
So they were the definition of poor little rich kids.
"But that's just the way it was with everyone we knew. We still had fun," Kieran said. "Right, Kara?"
She glanced at him. "Yeah, when you weren't being an asswipe or busy with junior ambassadors."
"I've never been an asswipe," he teased.
"Sure. Never."
"How many times did I make you shoot milk out of your nose from laughing?"
"Yeah, you used to do that on purpose."
"Maybe." He shrugged, smiling as he turned to face me. "What about you? What was it like growing up with twin brothers?"
I groaned. "Torture. Hell. I had to hide everything precious from them. They used to rip the heads off my Barbies just for fun."
I could see they both wanted to laugh.
"And don't even get me started about sharing a bathroom with them."
"What do you mean?" Kara asked.
"I've seen frat houses with cleaner bathrooms."
This time, they couldn't hold it in, and they burst out laughing.
"And they used to chase me around with boogers on their fingers, trying to wipe them off on me."
"That's disgusting!" Kara shrieked.
"And they seemed to have an endless supply," I added over Kieran's laughter.
"No wonder you don't want to go home," Kara said.
