Desperate enough to almost find it in the wrong group of people.

“Did you find the family you were looking for?”

I thought about the six best friends a guy could ever ask for. They were like brothers to me and I would do anything for them.

“Yeah, I did. These guys are the only family I’ve had in so long and I would move heaven and earth for them.”

“Is that why you all came to Willow Creek? Because Aaron’s mom is here?”

I smiled just thinking about the conversation that brought all of us to the small town. It was one of the few times we had ever argued about anything, but in the end we all showed up. Except for Lex. He took a bit more convincing and I still wasn’t sure my friend was going to stay.

“Yup. Aaron wanted to be close to his mother and the rest of us didn’t have a better option. I’m not saying we were thrilled about coming to a small town. Me especially. I usually need more adventure in my life, but then I met you.”

She lifted her head and met my eyes. “Are you saying I’m enough of an adventure for you?”

I chuckled. “Of course you are, and it’s the best adventure I’ve ever had.”

She settled back down and hid her eyes from me when she said, “I’m not sure I can give you more than this.”

She could and she would. I just needed to show her that we were better together than apart. But that wasn’t what I told her.

“I’ll take what I can get for now.”

It was several minutes before she spoke again. “Why?”

I rubbed her back with my one hand and the arm resting on my chest with the other hand. I wasn’t completely sure what she was asking, so I clarified. “Why what?”

“Why are you so patient with me?”

I wanted to scream that it was because I loved her but I figured that would cause her to run fast and far, so I went with a safer answer. “Because I know you’re worth it.”

Maisie didn’t say anything, not for a long time, and when she finally did, it was a whisper.

“I’m not sure that’s true.”

I didn’t let on that I heard her or say anything in response. She might not believe it but I would spend my days proving it to her.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Maisie

I wasn't falling for Hendrix's magic dick again.

Or his even more magical tongue.

Despite my efforts last night, as soon as he put me down and proceeded to kiss me, it was game over. My body remembered his touch and the traitorous bitch refused to be satisfied until she got what she wanted.

And what she wanted was Hendrix's pierced cock.

He might've won the battle last night, but I would win the war.

Tonight I was being smart. I asked Janie to close up the bakery, something up until recently I never would've done. I snuck upstairs early after making sure the coast was clear, and I meanclear. I stuck my head out like a burglar and looked right, left, up, down, and every direction in between to ensure there was no Hendrix in sight.

Then once I was positive he wasn’t lurking to steal me away again, I ran my ass up the steps and closed myself off.

I probably looked like an idiot in the process. I was sure if someone saw me, they were wondering if I had lost my mind. I loved Halloween and everything dark, so come tomorrow there would probably be an article out about how I was performing black magic in my home—that was how suspicious I looked.

I didn't care though. They could say whatever they wanted as long as Hendrix stayed away from me. The longer we spent together, the further I fell. Or more accurately, had already fallen. I knew without a shadow of a doubt he had snuck under my guards. And if I had any chance of surviving, I needed to eradicate him. I needed him to move on.
