Chapter Fifteen

Omen

I’VE BEEN WITH Oaklynnand Amanda every single day over the last two weeks. While we still have to have the big talk about us, we’ve been talking about things and getting to know one another. I’ve learned so many things about her and gotten a glimpse into her past. Oaklynn lights up when she talks about her parents and cried on my shoulder when she relived their death and having to uproot her life to move with her aunt and uncle after the accident that took their lives. She told me what she wants to do with her life once she gets into a routine with Amanda and can go back to work and everything else I could think of to ask her. I’ve told her about myself and why I’ve been the way I have been when it comes to relationships and kids. While I didn’t go into a ton of detail, she does understand enough to realize there is a reason why I’ve never wanted an ol’ lady or children. Even though I have a daughter now and have been here every single day.

When I’m not with Oaklynn and our daughter, I’m working long hours at Calhoun’s to get the bike done for the fire department. We’re making progress on the design and haven’t had a ton of things go wrong. Everything is fitting correctly and the parts we fabricate are coming out perfectly. Right now we’re waiting on the engine to arrive since I custom ordered one from a company I’ve built a good relationship with over the years since opening Calhoun’s. Most of the time when I’m at work, I’ve got my phone right next to me in case something happens to Oaklynn or Amanda. I want to hear her call the second it comes in if she needs me. When I call her during my breaks, if I take them, I usually video chat her so I can see the baby. It’s been an adjustment but I think we’re both handling the change in our lives the best we can.

My mom and Melissa have been hanging out with her during the day when I’m at work so she can get a shower or nap in. It doesn’t usually work because Amanda is as stubborn as I am. If it’s not Oaklynn or me, she doesn’t always eat from a bottle. She’d rather breastfeed. The only other person who can always get her to eat from a bottle is my dad. Amanda has that man wrapped around her little finger and he goes to Oaklynn’s cottage as often as possible. I know yesterday he was there after my mom called him because Oaklynn was literally falling asleep on her feet and Amanda wouldn’t eat unless it was from Oaklynn. My girl broke down in tears from pure exhaustion so my mom called in reinforcements. The second my dad showed up, he took Amanda in his arms and she immediately quieted down and ate from a bottle as long as she was pressed up against his chest. I left work early to make a good dinner for Oaklynn and spend time with our daughter so she could get things done around the cottage. I ended up falling asleep on her couch last night after we were up into the early hours this morning with a fussy baby.

I’ll be heading back over there after church tonight. Homicide, Grudge, and myself are heading to the clubhouse so we can have our meeting. My best friend and I want to get it over with because we both want to get home to our families. Well, I won’t be going home considering I don’t live with Oaklynn. That’s something I’ve been thinking about though. I want my girls in the same space as me. When I get home at the end of the day, I want to walk in to them in our home. To have Amanda’s toys all over the place while Oaklynn prepares dinner for us. Or works while I make us something to eat once I clean up from working in the shop all day long. I want Oaklynn’s touch all over my place and to know she’s safe behind the gate of the compound. My house is located on the back half of the property with many other members. Not everyone has chosen to live on the compound, but I have. I wanted to be close to my parents and the club while still having a place of my own when I need to get away from everything and everyone.

My house is just that. It’s not a home but rather four walls that I hang out in once in a while. It resembles a bachelor pad but there’s hardly anything in the place. The only room that’s actually furnished is the living room because that’s where I spend all of my time. When I’m there, I grab something to eat, have a few beers, and watch TV. I can count the number of times I’ve fallen asleep in the bed I have there on one hand. Usually, I pass out on the couch while watching TV. No one has ever been in the house with the exception of my parents and Homicide. I’ve never taken a woman back there and the only one who will ever step foot inside is Oaklynn. I want her to make it a home for us with my help. A place we can watch Amanda grow up and become a strong, independent woman. Not that my baby girl is ever going to grow up. She’ll always be my baby girl.

Pulling into the parking lot of the compound, the three of us park in our regular spots before shutting our bikes off and making our way inside the clubhouse. The common room is full and I notice we’re the last ones to arrive. We got lost in the build and ended up working later than planned. The good news is that in another week or so we should be done with the bike so we can tear it back down so it can be painted or shipped out to be chromed. That’s the one thing we don’t do at Calhoun’s.

“Church!” my dad calls out, standing from his usual seat at the back of the common room.

I watch as he leans down and gives my mom a kiss as she stands up and waits for me to get close to her. Stopping long enough to pull her into my arms for a hug, my mom doesn’t let me go immediately.

“I’ve got dinner for Oaklynn and you in the kitchen. Make sure you grab it before you head over there tonight,” she tells me, a smile on her face as I nod in response and head for the hallway to hand over my phone and gun. I’ve always got a gun on me and only take it off when I walk in the cottage even though I keep it close to me.

The Prospect takes my things and puts them on the table so I can grab them when church is over with. Walking in our meeting room, I take my seat next to Homicide. We’ve shifted around some and I now sit next to my best friend. It’s been discovered that when shit hits the fan, he’s the only one who can calm me down. Even more than my dad depending on the situation we’re in or what we’re talking about in church.

The second we’re all sitting in our chairs, my dad slams the gavel on the table in front of him.

“Church is in session. We’ve got a few things to talk about today. The first thing is that we’re still tryin’ to figure out who shot at Omen when he was out on the last run. Brick has been doin’ his thing on the computer and tryin’ to figure out where the shots came from through the cameras along the highway. It’s hard as fuck because there aren’t many of them for him to utilize and search. Honestly, it’s the perfect spot to take someone out because there are no cameras and not a lot of traffic on that particular stretch of the highway. We’ve got no leads up to this point and I’ve put out calls to all of our contacts lookin’ for anyone braggin’ about tryin’ to take my son out,” my dad says, making me angry because there’s a target on my back until we get this shit figured out. There haven’t been any more incidents since that run, but it doesn’t mean I’m not being watched. “Have you seen anythin’ or felt like you were bein’ watched, Omen?”

“No. I’ve got Prospects on Oaklynn’s house even if she hasn’t realized that yet. There’s at least one there all hours of the day because if there’s a target on my back, I’m not about to have somethin’ happen to my girls. I’m not about to stay away from them either,” I answer, looking around the table.

“Good. I was gonna suggest that. It’s somethin’ I’ve been thinkin’ about the last few days. Your mom has been keepin’ an eye on things when she goes over there. I know Melissa has been too. Brick, keep workin’ on that and let me know as soon as you find anythin’. If anyone hears anythin’, I want to know immediately. I’ll also be havin’ a meetin’ with the Prospects so they know to listen for any word about someone havin’ a grudge against Omen or the club. We all know we’ve got enemies and people who want to take us out. Why they’ve targeted my son, I don’t know. Unless it has somethin’ to do with those two skanks who got kicked out of the club because they attacked Oaklynn while she was pregnant. Any news on the two of them?” my dad puts out as I look around the table for any sign of the guys seein’ the girls who have attacked Oaklynn twice now.

“I’ve been searchin’ for them while I try to locate the shooter who tried to take Omen out,” Brick speaks out, his voice making all of us turn our attention to him. “They’re hangin’ out with another club two towns over. I didn’t even know there was another club so close. As far as I know, no one’s called us to set up a chapter of a club which is what’s supposed to happen. I haven’t been able to find much of anythin’ on the club yet, but I’ll keep diggin’. I’m also gonna have the Prospects put a tracker on Darian’s car the next time she’s in Frostford. They’re here most days for one reason or another. The second we have a tracker on her car, we’ll be able to figure out exactly where the club they’re hangin’ with is and I can gather even more intel on them. I’m wonderin’ if it’s someone from there who tried to take Omen out.”

“How long have you fuckin’ known about this other club?” Carbon barks out, his voice hard and cold because this is something Brick should’ve told us immediately.

“I literally just found out before comin’ into church today. My main focus has been on the person who tried to take Omen out. I know we all want Meisha and Darian dealt with after what they’ve done, but I figured someone tryin’ to kill a member was a higher priority,” Brick answers, keeping his voice strong and steady as he looks at my dad and no one else.

“Good. I know you wouldn’t have kept information like this to yourself, Brick. I want everythin’ you have on Meisha and Darian immediately. Get that tracker on the car and follow their movements. We’re gonna take them the fuck out as soon as possible. They almost caused Oaklynn to lose my granddaughter when they shoved her into the shelves at the grocery store. It’s bad enough Amanda was born early. They’re lucky as fuck she doesn’t have any lastin’ effects for bein’ born early,” my dad roars, his voice full of the rage the two of us feel when we think about Oaklynn being attacked again and it causing her to go into labor early because the two skanks are jealous and want me when they know they’ll never have me.

Murmurs of anger filter around the table as I sit forward and fold my hands on the table in front of me. Homicide rests his hand on my shoulder because he knows I’m about to explode. The thought of my girls being hurt by vengeful sluts because of jealousy is more than enough to make my blood boil. Darian and Meisha could’ve done so much more damage than what they did by hurting Oaklynn to the point they forced her to go into labor. Especially when they managed to make her stomach ram into shelving. I know Oaklynn would’ve done everything in her power to protect our daughter so this isn’t on her at all. Oaklynn would never put herself in harm’s way knowing she’s pregnant when I watched her do everything in her power to do everything right throughout her entire pregnancy. That’s shit I heard from Melissa and Grudge on a regular basis.

“I want all of you to be on the lookout for Meisha and Darian when you’re in town. Don’t confront them if you find them out at a bar or club when you’re out. Get with the rest of us and watch them. See who they’re hangin’ out with and keep tabs on them. If they leave, follow them and see if you can figure out where they’re livin’ or hangin’ out. The more information we have on them and the club they’ve aligned themselves with, the better prepared we’ll be to take them out. Yes, the girls will be taken out along with whoever shot at my son. Anyone have anythin’ else to bring to the table?” my dad asks, looking around the table as I sit up straight and look at the men surrounding me.

A few days ago, a plan formed in my mind when Oaklynn told me what she wants to do with her life. I can bring another business to the club while making her dream come true at the same time. As long as everyone goes for the idea that is.

“I’ve got somethin’,” I speak up, looking around the table as everyone’s attention comes to me. “Not many of you know this but when Oaklynn was livin’ with her aunt and uncle, she practically ran a funeral home. She wants to run her own now after workin’ so many years in one. Oaklynn fell in love with helpin’ people in their darkest hours after losin’ a loved one. While she knows every aspect of the funeral home business, she wants to be the face of the place along with the one who puts all the plans in place for each family or individual comes in the door. She’ll hire others to deal with the bodies and all that kind of shit. That’s one aspect of the business she wasn’t able to stomach doin’. I’m thinkin’ we help her make that dream a reality as a club. It would give us more legit income comin’ in while also givin’ us a place to deal with bodies when we can’t just bury them. We’d use the crematorium to burn the bodies to nothin’ but ash. I don’t know all the details, but I could draw up a business plan after doin’ some research. Just want to put it out there and get a feel for what you guys think.”

For several minutes, no one says anything about starting a funeral home. Even Homicide is blindsided by this coming from me even though I see a smirk on his face and I know he’ll give me shit about it sooner or later. Homicide loves to give me shit and takes every opportunity to do so. Finally, my dad smiles and I know he’s gonna have something to say about this as well. He won’t do it in front of anyone, but he’ll give me his two cents on the situation and what I’m willing to do for Oaklynn.

“Let’s do it,” Grudge speaks up before anyone else. “Oaklynn deserves to live out her dream and I know how much this will mean to her. It’s all she’s wanted to do since she moved in with her aunt and uncle. The girl won’t ask for help and I know she has the money to start one herself, but she won’t touch the money from her parents or uncle.”

I didn’t know my girl had money. Obviously she has to be able to pay for her rent and other bills somehow, but I never really thought about how much money she actually has to live on since she doesn’t have a job. At least not one that’s outside of her home. I guess this is something we’ll have to talk about as well. Once she moves in with me, she won’t have to pay for anything. Oaklynn and Amanda are mine and I plan on taking care of them in every way possible. She won’t have to pay for anything unless she goes out shopping or for whatever else women do when they get together.
